Traditionally “hooks” are URM (until the SCOTUS decision), 1st Gen, Legacy, Recruited athlete (I may be missing 1 or 2). Not just being a strong student. |
+1 I might add Pell eligible to this list. |
W&M and a lot of other schools are needs blind so they wouldn't know that. |
DP. If she prefers JMU, why on earth would you urge her to do this? |
Is there a greater than 0% chance a kid could get rejected by JMU but accepted by W&M? E&M was her second favorite, so covering all possible scenarios no matter how unlikely. |
+1 This was my thought. Your DD is literally telling you “I prefer this school that I am near-certain to get into…and even if the harder-to-get-into school accepts me, I want to go to this other school!” And you’re like “we’ll just apply to see what happens!” Why? So that she can feel sh!tty about being rejected by W&M? So that she can feel “proud” about being accepted by W&M even though she doesn’t want to attend? So YOU will feel proud of her for being accepted to W&M and will be able to brag about it even though she isn’t choosing it? (Or will you try ti talk her into attending bc it’s a ‘better” school? Newsflash PP, it isn’t better for your DD if she doesn’t want to be there!) Also keep in mind that if she already knows for sure she doesn’t want to go there, then it’s a wasted acceptance that the school could have given to someone else who really wants it. |
My reply is directly above yours. |

So W&M was her third (or higher choice)? Why would you be thinking about ED at all? I am wracking my brain, but can't think what E&M might stand for. |
If you really wracked your brain, you'd see that E is right next to W on the keyboard and recognize what an easy typo it is to make. |
