FBI Headquarter Plans in Limbo?

Maybe they’ll move into the abandoned Peace Institute HQ on Constitution Ave (by the State Department)? That building would also make a nice DC outpost for Space X. High visibility in a building by a world famous architect. Or perhaps the Federal Triangle space vacated by the shuttered Wilson Institute and USAID?

But Trump has also had visions of a new palatial FBI HQ that would take inspiration from the architecture of Imperial Rome. That’s Trumps’ favored architectural style, and the reason he agreed to Amtrak’s takeover of the Penn Station redevelopment. Amtrak’s Trump appointed leadership now favors a plan to rebuild the old Imperial Rome-inspired station that was demolished in the 60s for Madison Square Garden. Trump could also then purchase the naming rights to the new Penn Station.

Dan Bongino, the 20th Deputy Director of the FBI, proposed today to relocate the FBI training facility, currently in Northern Va, to Huntsville, Alabama. The primary goal is to reduce the presence of the FBI in the DC area.

Not sure how much of the FBI will be left for the president’s dream of a beautiful new HQ in DC.

Patel proposed that when he first came on and he was told it would be prohibitively expensive. Guess they haven't told Bongino that yet (he is the one who is supposed to already know that).

In the Washington Post today. The new HQ will be located in the former USAID HQ. The DC city councilor for ward 2 applauded the move.

Unfortunate. Suburban VA or Quantico would have offered many more operational advantages, even if a token presence remained in D.C. for the political appointees.

It would make sense to have the FBI close to the Justice Dept. since they work together.

Modern telecommunications make physical proximity largely needless. The Reagan building is indefensible, with a completely inadequate setback from the roads. There's a reason CIA and NSA are on large suburban campuses, surround by plenty of land for effective perimeters. A downtown location also make it difficult to attract talent, which often is uninterested in commuting into the city, especially support staff who are less well compensated.

Haha. Teams goes down all the time.

This is a pretty decent idea, tbh. The the Hoover building site can be rebuilt and the FBI can move back in.

They did want a large, suburban campus which can be made more secure, but they also wanted to stay in DC. Trump wants them in DC, so in DC the FBI shall stay … I guess.

Steny Hoyer is mad now because he won’t get a building in Greenbelt named after him.

Unless they are going to close 14th Street and Penna Ave in that area, I am not sure how that location is even remotely secure enough.

My sense is that this was an announcement made without any actual discussion, mostly to own the demise of USAID.
