Are you guys new here or something? This is discussed ad nauseum. Schools that don't need to draw in students give very little, even bigger state schools with decent acceptance rates for lower performing kids. PSU, OSU, and many big 10 schools, for example. The "selective" schools also don't have to draw schools (Ivies, NE SLACs). The ones that need to "make their case" a bit more will offer money. This has been the case since forever. . . . |
I am neither liking or unliking it. I am also not denigrating a D3 school. My main point (which you seemed to miss) is that sports lose money for ALL schools, so to think that Lynchburg deciding to expand into men's wrestling and volleyball is a good financial move is strange Yes, kids pick D1 schools like JMU and VT because they want to watch D1 sports. Even then, they are mainly watching football and basketball. They are also hoping those teams are ranked nationally (which they are) and are excited to follow them during the NCAA D1 playoffs (which they often make). Nobody picks a D3 school to watch their sports. Sure, they may end up going and watching...but nobody is following how well Lynchburg performed. BTW, Lynchburg is 63% female...so, not sure why you decided to chime in with the 50/50. The fact they are expanding men's sports is absolutely to increase their male ratio. None of this was to say that kids have a bad or good experience or that it is a bad school. However, if the school is having financial difficulties, they won't be solved by expanding sports which will lose the school more money. |
This is nonsense. Lynchburg has a 96% acceptance rate and a 54% graduation rate. Few (if any) are Athletic AND Academic All Americans. |
No way does HPU have zero debt. Just last year, the school had $103 million in debt, according to this article. They are taking in a lot but also spending like crazy. https://www.theassemblync.com/education/higher-education/nido-qubein-high-point-university/ |
High Point University dying would be an amazing change for US higher education. It's a resort with an elementary school attached. |
First 103 million in debt is tiny. But that is short term debt waiting to catch up to promised donations. HPU does not build a single building unless donors have agreed to pay for it. |
You could not be more wrong. Adding those sports adds many students paying tuition that would not otherwise attend, filling seats that would otherwise be empty. D3 does not offer scholarships nor do D3 athletic departments have anywhere close to the expenses of a D1 department. |

You’re an idiot. and an ignorant one. Their FH team alone had an ave. 3.69 gpa. 9 4.0 students. Head to IG ignoramus. It’s all there. |
+1 Here is another example-https://lynchburgsports.com/news/2024/6/18/cross-county-cross-country-track-field-earn-10-academic-honors-from-csc.aspx |

Sorry...I thought you meant these were HS academic All Americans. Those players are not going to Lynchburg. However, do you really think it is that difficult to maintain a 3.5 GPA at Lynchburg? |
Maintaining a 3.5 is an accomplishment anywhere. Your ignorance is showing again. |
You can sleep through all your classes and get a 3.5. Where in the world is it an "achievement." |
If this was true the national graduate rate wouldn’t be so low. Keep digging your ignorant hole. |
