Can you educate this parent of a junior: I thought that with ED, you could only apply to one because you have to make a commitment to go if you get in. How does it work applying to two?

4 EA- admitted to all

1 rolling- not admitted

2 RD- still waiting but expecting rejection

If kid is rejected ED1, then they still have time to ED2.

Some schools have ED1 (nov deadline) and ED2 (another round-jan deadline usually). If you are rejected from initial ED--you are off the hook can apply anywhere else. If PP's kid had gotten into the first choice ED--he/she would have had to withdrawal all-other applications because it is binding.

For parents whose kids applied to fewer than 10, would you mind sharing what that list looked like? You don't have to out your kid. I'm just wondering what a smaller list would be since mine is already up to 14 for next year and they aren't even done looking at ideas.

3 that would have been safeties but ended up being targets this year based on number of applications received. Safeties based on last year’s CDSs.

1 match

3 reaches

IS non-flagships -- think CNU, JMU, VCU followed by schools like Longwood, MWU, ODU
OOS flagships -- think 'Bama, UK, USC, UTK, WVU
OOS non-flagships -- think East Carolina U, East Tennessee State U, Miami of Ohio
Privates -- think GMU, Howard, Hampton

Our DC's four are all listed above along with several others that were considered but DC ultimately chose not to apply to. UVA wasn't in the mix and neither Tech nor W&M had their program of interest as a focus.

Anonymous wrote:If applying ED is an option, really strategize your choice(s). It seems increasingly rare that kids are getting accepted to high reach/reach schools. If it’s feasible, apply ED to a strong target. Also, echoing previous poster, cast a wide net and look at schools outside the most popular choices in your child’s class.

I think this is overblown. Take athletes, questbridge and legacies out of ED, and those numbers are not so impressive.

What does work is really focusing on one app. Taking time with 7 apps works a lot better than 20. (Unless those are just easy adds via UC system etc)

If you are rejected or deferred in ED1 (in December), you are free to apply ED2. ED2 deadlines are in mid to late January.

OK. Thank you. Mine is looking at UVA & VT, along with Michigan, USC (Cali), UF & GA. They have been involved in a sport forever and want to be able to continue at the club level in college, but it's only available of the larger schools. A lot of non-flagships mean giving that up.

7 total applications -

5 EA (admitted to all 5)
2 RD (waiting)

Of the seven, three were targets and four were likely admits. The two RD are targets.

Early on in the process, DC eliminated three schools that were reaches - academically or financially. Late in the process, DC added one likely for EA (and was accepted there).

This is such a smart and sane strategy. Kudos to your and your kid.

Five EA and one RD. All of those had Nov application deadlines to qualify for merit scholarships. DC got into all the EA schools so decided not to complete three or four additional RD applications that were on the back burner. We’re full pay.

Happy to have saved the application fees. Also this prevented taking a RD spot, as DC has no intention of attending since they got a better deal at the EA schools.

ED -1 (deferred)
EA - 12 (7-accepted, 2 denied, rest deferred)
RD - 8 (awaiting results)

Among these
High Reach - 4 (1-denied, rest deferred/waiting)
Reach - 6 (2-accepted, rest deferred/waiting)
Target - 5 (1-accepted, 1-denied, waiting on others)
Safety - 4 (all accepted)

MCPS/SMCS kid with 4.0uw/4.92w. Surprised that UVA(Target) got denied. Glad that DC got into two of the T20.

The 19 includes 3 from California system which is a single app. We might have paid $1200-$1400 overall for the application fees.

So does no one get into reaches during RD?
