Seems like a scam and a cult. I'd definitely check out their financial info and anything else you can find before sending someone there. |
How do they afford it -- they do not break ground on anything until they have the donors lined up. They are fairly solid except their endowment is small. |
I know 2 kid there who are special ed - in that they could not be mainstreamed in public schools. And at 60+K a year that is all I need to know. I hear the dorms are nice though! |
This last weekend I was sitting at a restaurant bar waiting to meet up with some friends and one of the TVs was airing the Golf Channel. In the 30 minutes I was sitting there, I saw two ads for HPU. My wife and I found it so strange. Clearly, pursuing a specific demographic. |
Will be interesting to see what happens with HPU’s accreditation status when it’s reviewed again this summer. |
No data to support my opinion, but it feels like Liberty w/out the religion. |
Do not be mistaken, there’s definitely a prevalent religious element to HPU. Their theme is “God. Family. Country.” https://www.highpoint.edu/values/god-family-country/ |
Oh the horror!! |
I mean, it’s pretty weird for an institution of higher education. And important for prospective families to know that there is in fact a religious element at HPU. |
It's religious, which is stupid. |
No, it's NOT pretty weird. Historically, the Church founded and funded all of the earliest universities and is responsible for many of the earliest discoveries in sciences, mathematics and philosophy. There is nothing new or "weird" about religious-based institutions and the scientific search for truth. |
The focus of Jesuit education, for example, is much different than HPU. This school is cultish and overly flashy, not to mention questionable in terms of actual educational value and student outcomes. Plus, much of HPU’s identity is substantially tied up with the ego of its university president in a very strange way (holding rally-type assemblies with flags, eagles, etc). It’s bizarre. |
That’s how it felt on our tour too- like a cult. The tour guide must have praised the High Point president like 200 times. It was weird. Gorgeous campus but at 2pm on a Tuesday all the students we saw were in the pool and not in the classrooms. The tour is great though, you get a free tshirt and a meal. |
