I don't know about the boys side, but on the girls' side the community is too small to burn bridges like that unless your kid is an absolute superstar

Most of these coaches already have players from last year and could add 1-2 new players based on team needs or if a star shows up.

The "tryouts" are a way to bring in more $$ by charging a fee - all the big/small clubs are doing it. The whole thing has been extremely frustrating for us as DS is playing D1 in FCBYL where we're seeing a lot of talent and great coaches. I wish FCBYL was year-round.

DP here, but 7th grade boys near Falls Church. Any smaller orgs nearby?

There is a strong demand for FCYBL level basketball year round. Unfortunately, there is no gym space. So people resort to AAU and as people have said, tryouts are to add 1 or 2 people to existing teams. Very frustrating indeed.

Sorry, not sure my list will help you because we are farther west in Fairfax but this is the list I have of smaller orgs that might have more roster spots. We decided to just do training this spring around LAX so I am not worried about competition LOL.

-Man2Man Soldiers (they are in Reston so that might be OK for you), haven't had try outs yet
-BRYC (they may have already had tryouts)
-CYA-Chantilly (second tryout this weekend)
-SYA-Centreville, probably too far (second tryout this weekend)
-Loudoun Basketball/Team attack (probably too far for you)
-CTS Elite-in Herndon (I heard they take everyone and just make more teams)

What sport uses all the gym space in the spring/fall? Why isn't there gym space in the other seasons? The gyms are there.

I always hear about how the teams will take anyone willing to pay but the competition seems pretty stiff on the boys side for spots.

It is, and the quality of the coaching is at a huge premium. I don’t know about everyone else, but I feel like the majority of coaches are not good at all.

Most of the teams in our county division had solid to excellent coaches and they are all volunteers.

Are the later tryout teams easier to get on since the better players are already on a team?

My kid got cut from Beltway Ballerz. I think my kid was borderline and my kid swears he is equal or better than some kids already on the team. I have learned that you have to be a standout and coach will not replace a bench with a new bench.

Were you cut from the 7th grade team? I heard that the 6th and 7th have a lot of talent.
