OP here. I really appreciate this question. I have thought about this a lot since deciding to carry. If it is my only option to protect myself or my family, yes. And still, I know my life would be changed forever. It's a terrible but important thought exercise I think anyone making the choice to carry should undertake with seriousness. I have decided I could live with myself and my actions under a narrow set of circumstances.

Is it just for someone stealing your wallet to die?

Yes. If they stick a gun in my face to do so. What a moronic question.

Enough of this “no one deserves to die for sealing a wallet” bs. How ‘bout no one deserves to die for being the victim of a random senseless crime? How ‘bout that?

Unpopular opinion: some people are more trouble than they’re worth and the world IS better off without them.

That is how I feel about people like you. Interesting.

Can you expand on that? Im interested in hearing the why.

I don't want to live in a militarized society where we're all threatening to shoot each other. There are serious issues to address, but the whole "an armed society is a polite society" is a lot of BS that the world would be better off without. We can actually be polite to each other for positive reasons.

I think your post confuses the right of every decent person to the efficacious means of self defense with the military use of firearms. People with firearms does not constitute “militarization.” And I don’t think “we’re all threatening to shoot each other.” No one can deny that there are unspeakably violent, evil, recidivist criminal predators in society, or that they look for the weakest possible victims. Going armed against becoming the victim of such a person is a perfectly reasonable precaution. Licensed gun carriers, who commit crime at lower frequency than police officers, tend to be very polite because they do not want to become involved in a shooting incident unless absolutely necessary. Conflict avoidance is part of a standard carry permit training course.

Think of this this way: by carrying a gun, you're tacitly acknowledging you may one day have to use it in public. So, best to practice frequently to make sure that if (God forbid) you have to use it, you will be able to draw, aim, and hit the bad guy in three seconds -- without accidentally hitting anyone else.

A few years ago, in another big city, I spoke to the owner of a private shooting range. His most consistent clients? Local police officers. They apparently didn't get as much on-the-job practice as they felt they needed to be confident of their ability to react quickly with their sidearm.

So, to any gun owner who's reading this thread: may I suggest you practice far more than you think you'd need to? If the cops feel the need for extra training every month, then perhaps you should be practicing every week.

If you do practice every week, then honestly, I'll probably feel safer walking at night beside you than without you. But if you don't practice... I really hope I'm nowhere near when you feel the need to draw.

Really? I mean, I don’t really trust them to carry a gun. Period. They don’t really sound trustworthy.

Honestly you will be less safe, as pulling your gun out will escalate any situation, and having a gun means a tragic accident is more likely to befall you or a loved one. Especially because you bought it because you are afraid, and fear is dictating your actions, vs say, a lifelong hunter who has been handling guns safely for years.

I agree with you that dc crime is out of control and yes the (“defund the police..wait come back police where’d they go?!!”) council and mayor are responsible for fixing that and haven’t done a good job objectively, relative to places like pg county. But your solution is more likely to get you killed. Take a self defense class.

I’m all in on CCW. Did not know was an option in DC. Have several neighbors who will be thrilled to hear this. Thanks, OP!

All you have done is greatly increased the chance that you or someone in your house will die. You have also increased the chance that someone else will die or be seriously injured. I guess by telling us you have reminded us that anyone can be a lunatic and we should all be cautious.

Great now we get to be in the crossfire when someone wants to shoot a mugger and bullets start flying down the street into my window. Just give them your damn wallet and stop with the rambo fantasy.

That’s scary that you’ve accurately shot so many attackers that you believe you are a good shot.

I don’t trust anyone who owns a gun and does NOT support common sense gun laws.

Open carry is an implied threat. Keep that nonsense away from me and my family.

But concealed carry is not a implied threat? Ignorance is bliss?

The use of firearms for hunting and the use of them for self defense have virtually nothing to do with each other beyond the four basic safety rules.

The vast majority of “self defense” techniques are useless or worse, particularly if they are never practiced, which is typically the case.

Far from “escalating any situation,” the mere display of a firearm regularly is all that is required to stop criminal aggression.

You confuse “fear” with an attitude of reasonable precaution.
