I'm a DC resident, applied for my CCW, and I'm now carrying concealed

What if what they want is to rape you?

I heard a record-scratch-sound-effect in my head when I read this.

Good point.

Dc native here and 100% agree.

The left leaning transplants are the worst people.

Why would you do that to your dad. Rude!

You can have my car, my cell phone, my credit cards, and any other thing you want. But I am getting home to my family at the end of the day.

This city seems more worried about the wellbeing of criminals than law-abiding citizens. The most important job of government is protecting the safety of residents. The city doesn't have the stomach for it, so I have to do it myself.

I'm a lifelong democrat. I believe in sensible gun control. I'm not a "gun nut." What we have here are not Democratic policies. Democrats don't believe in lawlessness. Parents don't believe in lawlessness.

I pray I never have to use it. I can't imagine having to take a life.

Oh great, another armed legend in their own mind.

You’re going to end up like that pair who shot (and killed) each other in Largo, Florida this week in a dispute over a 2-year-old car repair.

The number of scenarios where you end up escalating the scenario and getting hurt worse or end up shooting the wrong person far outweigh the possibility of you successfully protecting yourself. Good luck.

You gotta do what you gotta do. Good on you OP. My dad always used to say “always look out for #1.”

OP here - a few quick responses.

- Process is tedious and time consuming but not difficult. You have to take a class that includes time at the range. You have to demonstrate that you can safely handle and fire the weapon. You have to go through a background check with MPD before you can take possession of firearm. I didn't feel like there was enough shooting practice to feel comfortable so I took a basic pistol class that really helped. I didn't grow up around guns, and I didn't want to accidentally hurt myself or someone else.

- I safely store my firearm in a safe.

- DC is a shall issue state now - you don't have to provide a reason other than "self defense."

- I'm intentionally calmer now, especially in the car, because the last thing I want to do is escalate with a firearm. The law in DC is clear that you have a responsibility not to escalate and to retreat if possible if you want to claim self-defense. I guess there are some "legend in your own mind" people who carry. I'm the opposite.

- I live here and I have roots here. I'm not going to move to the suburbs. I'm also not going to live at the mercy of armed criminals with no regard for human life.

How do you put 'gun' and 'pray' into same story. Why not just pray when it does is happening to you?
What about a mace and airgun and good to go.

DC requires training to get a CCW.

+1. Also proof of an unusual need. DC is very strict. OP is Lying

Not anymore. DC was forced to go shall-issue by the courts a few years ago.

DC is shall issue now, just like the People's Republic of Maryland is now shall issue. I think it was due to Bruen v New York.

This is a silly statement. Can you not be religious and in the military? In law enforcement? Police officers also pray that they won't have to take a life/that their lives won't be taken. Also, having an airgun is about the dumbest thing you can do - carrying around a gun that won't hurt anyone but that looks like a real gun is a great way to escalate and not be able to actually protect yourself.

That's great but, people with guns just look for a chance to use them. Make sure you don't turn into the next Bernie Geotz.

Then I hope they die.

I have nothing against responsible gun ownership, but I don’t think you can change my view that if you’re about to get mugged or carjacked or whatever, pulling a gun is just going to escalate and put you more at risk.

Do we hear many stories of people successfully defending themselves from random violence/theft with a gun?
