Most overrated international destination?

We’re the oldest and greatest country on the earth, we have the highest standard of living, and we’ve never lost a war, we can judge whoever we want!

What?? No part of this is correct.

USA is younger than a looong list of countries, China, England, France.
Highest standard of living?? People regularly declare bankruptcy over medical debt, no paid sick leave, higher infant mortality than almost every country in Europe.
Lost wars = Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq.

Barcelona, Venice, and Florence are just too overrun with tourists. I actually thought Madrid was fabulous—it seemed like a real city with actual locals and I wasn’t tripping over a tourist every two feet.

You are a tourist!!! Wtf

She sounds like one of those insufferable “travelers” who visit places and have disdain for “tourists.” These people are like beer snobs. Annoying AF.

Because you’re right: They’re tourists.

Reminds me of the satirical book “The Beach” by Alex Garland that was turned into a movie with Leonardo DiCaprio. People who view travel destinations like commodities and think they only have value (and virtue) if they are rare.

We’re just the only country that tells the other countries we’re the best in the world.

Sure.

But why do people all over the world risk their lives to cross the border and build a life here? Surely there is a reason. ICYMI: upward mobility is a very real possibility, and even if you fall short you are in a safe area with access to everything you need.

Americans romanticize other countries and judge our own country far too harshly.

Pretty sure that was sarcasm.

Grand Cayman. Total dump with fantastically overpriced food/drinks. City blocks infested with chickens and roosters crapping everywhere.

Americans are also most capable of detecting sarcasm.

This tired trope again.

Eh, much of Europe is plagued with rampant pickpockets. That simply isn’t the case here.

Much of the world seemingly tolerates littering. And public urination. Eww.

Much of the world has a shortlist of tourist spots, whereas the US is vast and you rarely feel a crush of tourists as you do at the Trevi Fountain or pretty much any tourist spot in Italy during the summer months.

We are very lucky in the US to have so much space and so many places to visit—including off the beaten path destinations.

Plus, American tourists know how to form a line and wait patiently. Apparently the rest of the world never got the memo.

You’re right— in the US, I’m afraid of being mugged/shot, not pickpocketed.

Littering is everywhere in US cities.

I see public urination in DC all the time.

Of course there are crushes of tourists in the US as well.

Waiting in line patiently is what really threw me off. I’m in Japan right now, and people here truly wait in line patiently. In the US, you can get trampled by people trying to board a subway car.

I work in DC and live in the burbs. Im not afraid of getting mugged or shot? Where do you live and work? And do you think it’s rational to fear being mugged or shot at the top US tourist spots? I don’t. But being prepared for pickpockets is necessary in most European and Mediterranean tourist areas.

Litter in the US just doesn’t compare to Europe and the Mediterranean.

Re: waiting in lines (or simply knowing how to line up) is a problem with certain cultures…not typically the Japanese.

Agree. Mostly dangerous.
Many of my long time resident San Diego friends who have fond memories of going across border say they absolutely won't now.

Amsterdam- turned off by the people and sex industry there.

Nice- very disappointing and unattractive compared to surrounding beaches and countryside in the South of France.

You have to kind of look for the sex industry in Amsterdam, pp.

Other countries also invite other countries to their "World Series".

Would like to see a Venn diagram of posters on this thread, regular Disney visitors, and regular Delaware beach visitors.
