Deciding between Georgetown vs. Vanderbilt - Fall 2023 Transfer

So you clearly don’t know all the smart kids. My smart kid from from a DC private and several of DC’s friends all applied to Georgetown, a couple also applied to NU and not one of the group applied to Vandy. My DC wanted no part of a southern, Greek-oriented, preppy school.

No, I don’t know every smart kid, but the acceptance rate for both Vanderbilt and Northwestern is half of the rate for Georgetown. The trends are changing.

I hope your kid’s friends got into Georgetown or NU or whatever school they prefer. You can’t go wrong! I just wouldn’t choose Gtown if I had the other choices (not purely based on ranking- for other reasons that I’m sure are driving the acceptance rates).

You can’t really compare since Georgetown does not accept the common app, requires more essays and does require standardized tests. These hurdles narrow the applicant pool significantly. Vandy, in contrast, takes nearly half its class test optional. Personally think this means Georgetown will have a stronger class.

It’s fallen out of favor for test-optional kids or kids that take 3+ times to pull up scores. GU required ALL test scores, every date a student sat. Not being on the common app further is an obstacle and very, very few get accepted. I think in our large public we only have 1 kid or none (700 kids in grade) each year.

You folks from the DC area don’t seem to grasp how much of GU’s undergrad cachet out of the area came from being good academically AND having a top basketball team. Without the great hoops team GU becomes Tufts.

regarding the law schools, they are overall comparable but Georgetown is substantially better for DC biglaw. Vanderbilt has a higher clerkship rate

Georgetown law's advantage over vanderbilt is that it's much better for public interest, whereas Vanderbilt is very focused on biglaw. Georgetown is much better for going into government

I think you think I’m a longtime Tufts fan who’s sung the Jumbos’ praises here before. I’m actually new here but lived in Mass quite a while. Exactly where Tufts fits into the higher education landscape is apparently as popular a parlour game in DC as it was in Boston. Its unpronounceable name, goofy mascot, school of law that’s not a law school, weird campus, and heroic struggles to be seen with those 2 gigantic shadows coming out of Cambridge blocking out the sky like a biblical locust attack make it eternally interesting. But hang a national championship banner in their gym you really do have GU’s Mini-Me.
