Otherwise the narrative becomes "teachers are so underpaid".

OK, maybe they are. But let's have that discussion when framed with the actual numbers.

A teacher with 10 years experience and a masters (which you have to get) would earn 80,287.

That is not a bad salary for 10 months.

Maybe it should be more, but it is also higher than many people think, and is more than many Montgomery county residents make.

Lol do you even hear yourself? Someone with ten years experience and a masters should be happy with 80k in Montgomery County? My starting salary with a masters and zero experience was 93k. What an insult and a joke.

And only a teacher that has all the experience in MCPS would get that pay. I have 20 years experience but I’m only paid for 8 because I am new to MCPS.

Let’s also not forget what else teachers deal with. In the same week I was hit with a piece of classroom furniture, threatened twice with a gun (by 2 different students), and cursed at twice (by 2 different students). This is not worth $80k/yr

It’s not worth any amount of money. Are they going to make you sit in a sharing circle with the students with guns?

That’s exactly what they did. Admin said they didn’t want the student to think I “felt unsafe around them”.

Sounds like you need to call MCPD and press charges.

Again. The state law changed. MCPD is very limited in what they can do right now. It's incredibly frustrating. My life was threatened (no gun insinuations, just threatened) and the kid was back in the classroom I think 2 days later? Par for the course in today's public school classrooms, unfortunately.

Not MoCo, but this was my niece's school. 12 yo brought a GUN to school - no consequences. This is the state of MD - all over now.

Anonymous wrote:I am reading this a few ways. County Council honors teachers during teacher appreciation week in the middle of a teacher shortage by not funding a pay raise/school budget? Come on. That is terrible optics and should rightly be called out. My feeling is that the county council wants to use the tax money for their own self promoting pet projects without dedicating funds to schools permanently.

The CC did not deny teachers a pay raise. They didn’t sign off on the full tax hike. Teachers can and will still get a pay rise. MCPS wants to give teachers a raise, and Maryland Blueprint requires that starting salaries increase to 60k.

Can we please stop spreading this incorrect information. That’s one of the biggest problem with politics, lack of truth and context.

I thought we voted to require the CC to be unanimous to raise taxes. How can they just ignore the laws when they feel its inconvenient?

State law allows a majority vote if the tax increase is for education. It's shady and really finding loopholes that hurt the county. My guess is Rich Madaleno had a lot to do with that approach. He's dogged us before when he was State Senator.

Rich Madaleno didn’t mention this state law when he testified in favor of Elrich’s version of the charter amendment in 2020. Unless you think he’s completely dishonest, the assertion that the state law applies in Montgomery County is a new interpretation for him. Elrich seemed to think the state law didn’t apply here either when he supported the charter amendment in 2020.

So they were lying then or they're lying now. Not a good look.

However none of that is on the county council, and is also not a compensation issue.

Actually it is. They oversee MCPS and have the final say.

Actually the BOE oversees MCPS.

Actually

PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Montgomery County Public Schools is governed by the County Board of Education (Code Education Article, secs. 4-101 through 4-126). In addition, through the review and approval of the annual operating and capital budgets, Montgomery County government exercises authority over the County Public Schools.

Moreover, through the establishment and monitoring of various financial and academic policies and regulations, the State Department of Education also has considerable oversight of county public schools. Indeed, under Maryland law, the State Department of Education works with county public schools to comply with requirements and mandates of federal law.
In Montgomery County are 209 schools: 25 high schools, 40 middle schools, and 135 elementary schools, as well as a career and technology academy, and eight special schools. In Fiscal Year 2021, some 158,231 students were enrolled in the County's public schools.

https://msa.maryland.gov/msa/mdmanual/36loc/mo/html/functions/moeducation.html

Nice selective bolding you did there. How 'bout this:
"In addition, through the review and approval of the annual operating and capital budgets, Montgomery County government exercises authority over the County Public Schools."

As a duly elected body, the BoE has final say over the specifics of operating the school system.

The county council supersedes the board. They can remove the board if needed. So yes. They have the ultimate authority. Maybe MCPS really isn't the best if the parents coming of the system don't understand how government works.

Source?

Maryland Code, Education § 3-901

You said "The county council supersedes the board. They can remove the board if needed. So yes. They have the ultimate authority. Maybe MCPS really isn't the best if the parents coming of the system don't understand how government works"
Yes, they can remove a member for cause. That's not ultimate authority over the board. That's limited oversight, in conjunction with allocating money.

MCPS, MCEA, MCAAP/MCBOA and SEIU Local 500 are in lock-step in getting the full funding, so they held a presser locking arms and demanding all of our money.

All whose money? Pretty sure MCEA isn’t robbing individual bank accounts, but cute, juvenile thought!

That's nonsense. If someone pulls a gun on you, YOU need to report it. If you choose not to do anything about it, that's on you.

Is this just a way to extort more property taxes out of county residents?

They could fully fund now if they'd just cutback the number of CO jobs that nobody would miss.

I always thought at some point people would get tired of the MCEA and their similar groups, strong arming the council and the executive to get whatever they want.

I know I pay absolutely no mind to the apple ballot, but it's still a winner.

You'd think with the schools in decline, and them all championing a 10% property tax increase in the middle of high inflation and an economic downturn- that people would change their tune, but I doubt it.

And reading comprehension isn't your strong suit. NO guns were involved. Threats. But I guess that's ok with the parents? Because YOU are letting it happen to us by not raising your kids right.

Schools aren't in decline. I think you're confusing this with broad shifts in demographics that have gone on here over the past 2-3 decades. The same kid can do as well today as 30 years ago, maybe even better, but now we're a more diverse group with differing goals and values.
