Disagree about monograms, generally. Many of us have inherited monogrammed linen napkins from grandparents, etc. They're beautiful and traditional. In my family, they're washed after every use.

Except authentically poor people don’t exactly dress like Dust Bowl Okies (a somewhat au courant look which is very expensive to replicate with natural fabrics.), they frequently wear cheap and cheerful synthetic fabrics a couple of sizes too small. Burlap is too expensive.

+1 I'm confused about the washing part. We wash all our napkins (well the help does the washing)
