Scholarship to study abroad
Triple legacy status
EA deferred, RD waitlisted OOS

But wow! You must be proud

The kid was accepted at SUNY Binghampton thus far. Hoping the gap year program accepts her. Poor kid needs a break before doing the 4 year grind all over again.

GPA is low for UVA unless that is top 5% in the class.

Hmm, don’t know the class rank. Not placing blame at all but guidance counselor all but called it a sure thing because of the NMS commendation.

UVA and VT were in the Washington Post article saying NMS doesn’t hold weight with them.

well then what actually does hold weight with them? I have been reading the admission blogs from time to time and they some come across as quite condescending.

Grades and most rigorous classes offered at your school - that is the most rigorous classes possible in the five core courses every year. And four years of foreign language. That's what UVA cares about.

They say this and it’s been proven true from what I’ve seen. But requiring 4.5+ GPAs not just about all else, but in some cases excluding all else (for example perfect SAT scores don’t help to bump your GPA) seems like a bad formula. On multiple levels.

How can you start to make any kind of plans? Seems like a giant game and we are tired of playing. Applied to a good balance of schools.

790M/780V SAT
4.0UW/4.7W
All the usual APs with 4-5s
Strong application with true passion project and 4 year community leadership/volunteer positions
Great LORs
Counselors are stumped

Overall just a strong, smart, passionate student who has worked his tail off in high school and is NOT feeling the love. Maybe bc last name is literally at the end of the alphabet and people get tired reading apps??? Who knows. It's hard to respect the game when you have no idea what the rules are.

I feel your pain - my DC is in same boat with similar resume....but not a name at the end of the alphabet!

How can they expect high school kids to get straight As AND take the MOST rigorous courses in ALL core subjects AND still be somewhat normal, social and not a nervous nut job?? Sounds like a way to encourage cheating out of fear of not making the cut. Teaches them how to game the system. Give me a class full of kids that are excellent in some subjects and decent in others. I fear we are creating a generation of grade grubbing, burned out, back stabbing neurotic robots.

What gaming the system? You can't really do that.

Problematic for sure.

Way to put down the kids who get the good news. We know from this forum that a lot of people are getting As, taking APs, and are involved.

They admit the best of the group that applies and it just so happens that lots of great kids apply.

Just got home from Friday night sports. DS, unhooked from FCPS, applied to engineering. DEFERRED EA. Now WAITLISTED. 3.98/4.5, 1560. Settling for honors english and not taking AP Lang and/or Lit likely contributed to his "downfall".

How does that differ from here? Lol. I find the students reporting on Reddit and College Confidential to be refreshingly honest and frank

I didn't read it like that. My son has high stats, but the cost to achieve them has been significant. Regardless of where schools they go to, we have to stay aware of the mental and physical burden that these kids are shouldering.

This summer, I want to him to vegetate at least. Do nothing except eat, exercise, sleep, do his favorite things. He's earned it, and needs to recharge before college.

Sounds just like my DS. Had a game tonight and just checked. Deferred EA. Waitlisted. 4.2W Test Optional. Full IB at one of FCPS lowest ranked high schools (high FARMS, high ESOL.) DS is caucasian, UMC. He had a C in IB Chemistry sophomore year when they were online for 3/4 of the year.
