It's the elephant in the room. |
Yes. This crowd will say, "oh oopsies, we didn't know! sorry!" |
We traveled extensively with kids and did not save for college. Older is graduating from university this year with no debt due to the full scholarship, same plan for next kid. You don't have to travel expensively, there are plenty low cost locations in Asia, Africa and Europe. For example, skiing in Austria is much cheaper than skiing in West Virginia. |
Lies. You can’t even FLY to Austria for what I spend all-in for us to ski at Snowshoe. Who cares if you spend less once you are there. |
No way you migrated once is my point. You travel when it suits you and act like it’s a problem when others do. |
People like this will travel to other countries and come back talking about how eye-opening it was to see poverty there. Meanwhile they live in DC and get mad about tent encampments lowering their property values. Most travel does not broaden perspectives. It makes people feel more sophisticated, which is different. |
The cruise ports had a taste of what it would be without tourists during the pandemic - and I'm pretty sure 99% decided they'd rather have that business and reopened. They could have stayed closed. I believe Acadia and Key West and Venice have considered closing to cruises - it's something possible to do if a locale doesn't want those tourists anymore. |
True dat. |
I'm pretty sure these respondents have a Tesla and think they are holier than thou, without wondering about what kind of mining went into making the battery and how it's going to be disposed of when they're done with their car. |
We flew first class ad stayed at the St. Regis in Miami fora week for almost the exact same amount as it would have cost to stay at the hotel closest to my in laws in OC MD. |
I believe you. Decent hotels in Ocean City are insanely expensive in the summer. While OC is fun in small doses, nosy am I paying over $600 per night for a hotel room there. People like OC because it’s easy to get to. Miami requires a flight and a little more work to get there. For the Austria/Snowshoe comparison…the only way Austria might be cheaper than Snowshoe is if you travel alone. If you have a family, airfare is going to eat up your money. If you go solo, maybe it’s cheaper? You would have to score a good airfare, stay at a moderate hotel in Innsbruck and I do believe that lift tix are cheaper in Europe than the U.S. |
I’m the pp. We too fly to FL rather than use local beaches and I agree. But the Austria example is not the same type of comparison. Even if I could fly the 4 of us to Austria for $800 each (a steal), $3200 is still more than I spend at Snowshoe, including lodging, rentals, tickets and meals. |
Again, until nations and corporations make large strides, the rest is just us spraying a garden hose at a forest fire. This just mental gymnastics to give yourself permission to trash your own children's future. |
| For a lot of us who travel a lot we feel pressure to get those trips in while our kids are still home. My own experience is that real family vacations end when the first kid goes to college. So maybe a lot of the families are doing more now because they know time is limited. |
??? Nobody I know does that. Do you only know Mormon missionaries or something? The people I know are going places way better than here, they’re having incredible experiences, they’re not poverty tourists on mission trips. |
