| So jealous of some family that take 5 exclusive trips a year. It is just too expensive for us. We have kids and with the cost of college rising we just don't have enough. And travel prices are so expensive now. I don't know how people do it. My husband and I both work tirelessly and still can't get by. |
I'm so sorry I would try to focus on gratitude for all the things you do have. Maybe unfollow people on social media who post travel posts alot so that you don't get triggered.
|
| I can't even look at the travel section of the paper. Too jealous and FOMO - i agree |

Compare with families who have less, not more.
In any event, five big trips a year is overkill and really the rarity instead of the norm. |

You don’t have to pay a lot of money to have a fun trip.
For 2 summers we rented a $6K house with 2 other families in the outer banks, each paying $2K for the week. One of my kids still says it is his favorite vacation. My neighborhood friends and I also try to camp one weekend a year together and the kids also have a blast. It is not necessarily my cup of tea but I am willing to do it once a year. |
OP here---I agree - we take simple road trips and have fun |
| It's so weird me to that people on DCUM have been on multiple international vacations. I never have (business travel, yes). But popping over to Europe for a long weekend? Cannot relate. |

| Either you live somewhere very very very rich or you spend too much time on DCUM. I live in Loudoun County, and no one here travels like that, not even the "rich" folks. Yes people may travel 3-4 times a year, but lots of the trips are domestic and many are driving. I'm not complaining a bit, we have a very nice life. |
| I am happy jealous to hear of friends traveling. I take great trips but love hearing and dreaming about their travel. |
| What does a typical year of trips look like for that family? |
This is my wife(maybe it's you, honey?)... Drives me nuts. It's not in our budget, but thanks to her proclivity with social media, she sees it all the time and then I get to hear about it. Just got to hear about some friends that were in Colorado skiing. She had this idea that we'd galavant off somewhere over this coming long holiday weekend.... I'm looking forward to hearing about all the places people will be going and bragging about in social media over spring break in a couple of weeks. Why torture yourself engaging with and fussing over what other people are doing? I don't get it. |
What is an “exclusive” trip? Most people travel with just their families. |
Social media has been horrible for this. All the people not going somewhere do not post so they are easy to forget - but there are way more of them! |
Depends on timeframe, right? Our family has traveled internationally (including Costa Rica, which clearly is international but not really substantively overseas) 4 times in 10 years. So no quick trips for long weekends, but yes have done it every 2-3 years. HHI around $250k, but we utilize points/miles to keep costs reasonable, and have low mortgage costs, no more student loans, no other debt. |
