No. The CORRECT answer is not "have empathy", the CORRECT answer is that it is NOT acceptable, whether it happens to them, or whether they do it to me or anyone else. Inflicting abuses on others because you had them inflicted on you only further propagates a cycle of abuse rather than actually dealing with it. |
Not here you can't. |

An elderly man was car jacked in Bethesda. |
The politicians in charge, including at the state level, view the people who commit crimes as the real victims. And the politicians have adjusted laws/practices accordingly. Same thing in DC, so we get bleed-over, as well. This is the new normal. I say this as a liberal who understands that historically, our multiple criminal justice systems have been too brutal. But the policy makers have gone in the completely opposite direction. Instead, they should match rational punishments to the crime. Clear, known consequences, swiftly imposed. People will reoffend when they see there are no consequences to their actions. |
The fist thing every carjacker and violent criminal in Bethesda does is flee to DC. That alone explains everything. |
I completely agree with you, but crime is up in cities and states that do not have these same policies. Something else is going on along with it. I’m honestly not sure what. The pandemic made people a little crazy. |
No one has any idea what might work to either rehabilitate or deter offenders. There are only two practical choices in the US at the moment: incapacitate offenders via mass incarceration, or accept a higher level of crime than anyone wants with the attendant consequences on victims and social order. That’s it: everything else is just wishful thinking by those who want to avoid acknowledging this harsh truth. |
Your post is about as clear as mud. Nothing but innuendo. The fact is that MoCo has increased funding for the police. Period. In light of that fact, all of your rhetoric about “defunding” is blatantly disingenuous. |
What, people can’t ask a question now? |
That's not true. There are decades of research showing what does and what does not work. Evidence-based policing, prosecution, and violence prevention practices all get lost in the political posturing and self-promoting chatter. |
They have cut staff and services. Funding has gone up because compensation has gone up. Nothing else. |
Not Council but Jamie Raskin lives there. |
The governor and other two Democratic candidates for governor (Moore, Franchot, Perez) all had Takoma Park roots. The County Executive (Elrich). The District 5 CM (Stewart). In the last Council session that ended in December there was Riemer and Hucker. Etc, etc. |
Lay that out in more detail |
| How about we let criminals go to jail? |
