Upper Beach Drive to Remain Closed to Cars Year Round

They never reopened Klingle Rd. These things have a way of becoming permanent.

Upper Beach Dr and Klingle Rd served very different purposes.

No, because Beach has been closed for over two years. We can see how it is going to be, which is not different than it is today.

Really a nothingburger.

You incorrectly assume traffic volumes aren’t going to increase as more people return to an office, even if only part-time.

They can take public transit or bike if the new traffic patterns are that big of a problem for them.

This thread is filling me full of schadenfreude knowing that all the car addicts are seething with impotent rage, grasping at "but what if!" straws when in reality that road is closed for good and it's never coming back.

Cope.

If Trump gets elected again (highly probable), reopening Beach Drive is totally something he'd do just to piss of Ds.

You be sure to cope then.

What are you talking about?! I’m a D and want it open. I think the breakdown of supporting reopening is if you live near RCP with kids. Not a single neighbor with kids supports this because of the increase car traffic in the neighborhoods.

+1

Those with kids and those that frequent both sides of the park want it open. Those without kids and those that don't frequent the "other" side don't want it reopened.

Inaccurate. Source: father of three in CCDC who is very happy with the NPS decision. And by "other" side do you mean the north side or the south side because those are the two "sides" connected by Beach Drive. Or were you trying to make this an EOTP vs WOTP thing?

Wise doesn't go all the way through. Hawthorne and Barnaby Woods are connected to Colonial Village and North Portal via Beach Drive.

Om a side note where can I park so I can walk my dog there? I live too far away to walk. ( without getting a ticket) so like 2 hour parking

TY!

Bike lanes are not a big EOTP. That's a rich white people thing.

What bike lanes?

To where? The local buses in that area have been cut back or eliminated. Also no dogs allowed

It's easy to access through the neighborhood side streets which is why people are opposed to this idea. There are also plentiful trails which is why people who walk are confused why this is being done.

I am happy with the decision because it works for me personally. Having limited MD traffic heading toward the zoo makes it easier for me to get from Petworth to Porter because traffic from Arkansas down onto Piney Branch will now move more quickly.

That said, objectively speaking, I hate what DC and the Park Service have been doing to DC roads. So many closed streets, lost lanes, ugly flex posts. So when I think about Beach being closed, I don't like it. It just happens to work for me.

Those soon to be on Connectic 14th and Georgia which combined with this decision will.push traffic onto the neighborhood side streets and make it a bad idea. In addition, closing upper Beach to cars makes it a defacto bike lane since there is no other use for a paved road that increases runoff in a natural park.

If cars are excluded then the road should be dug up to improve drainage and prevent flooding.

There is a parking lot near the intersection of Beach and Broad Branch which is right at the southern end of the closed part of Beach Drive.

This doesn't actually help you either. Closing upper Beach just prevents people from taking it all the way. They'll cut through the neighborhoods and enter on Broad Branch instead

The small part of Beach between Wise and West Beach is open so you can go down Wise, turn left on Beach, then turn right onto West Beach to get to Kalmia

It is a park, not a highway. The mission of the national PARK service is to maintain parks, not provide a commuter route for drivers of cars.

Wise Road => Beach Drive => Colonial Village or... Broadbranch Road => Beach Drive => Blagden = Colonoal Village.

Not hard. Never crowded to drive.

Blagden goes to Crestwood. To get to Colonial Village would require going up 16th Street a couple of miles.

Bike lanes are not a big EOTP. That's a rich white people thing.

EOTP has good bike lanes on 14th (starting at Aspen) and 11th. I ride em all the time.
