Why are cruises trashy?

Anonymous
I went on my first cruise this summer and was pleasantly surprised that there were several hand sanitizer stations set up all around the buffet area and hand washing areas in other sections. I am assuming this was a covid thing or maybe for norovirus or perhaps both. I don't know if they had this kind of set up prior to covid.

There is more Norovieua at your local school and hospital percentage wise than on your cruise ship. Cruise ships just have to report it while schools and hospitals don’t!

Went on a food tour with seven ships in port several years ago with over 16,000 coming in to the island. We never ran into another cruise ship passenger and went to places you would never visit out of fear. AmazingZ

Went to a Sanctuary really off the beaten path in Jamaica and had hummingbirds feed out of small bottles of sugar water I held in my hand. Sure I could have done that on a land trip, but a relaxing cruise has made that possible.

I'd actually love to see some cites on this. I like cruising, but am concerned about the environmental impact. But I also don't feel like I have the data to assess it. Would love to see some!

Yes! So true!!

Also, quietly criticizing gauche family members for the slightest infraction.

Crazy? Of course not. Go for it.

Ah yes, my people.

It is trashy because for the most part it is lazy people who want to experience something new with no effort and no real interest in engaging with the place in any meaningful way. They want to pull up in their ports in an ugly boat, descend on some place, scoop the cream off the top and go back to their boat where they can drink too much and eat too much. They get to feel like they are someone special, all the while willfully ignoring the fact that they are polluting the air and the water of the “paradise” they are visiting and the fact that they are waited on hard working people who have no other option but to leave their families and their homes for months at a time for crap wages because it is their best option - and for those crap wages they get to make some schmo from the US feel like somebody. They get to tolerate drunks, aggressive passengers and unruly children, all with a smile on their face. In short it isn’t the mode of travel that makes it trashy it is the ignorance and indifference multiplied by hundreds that makes it trashy.

Like they enjoy sea world or the zoo or fly by plane or live in a big house or drive gas cars or…..eat meat.

Hypocrisy that’s how. Most everyone. More and more people ….more and more

Cruising is the most polluting way of travel.

Just google "the most polluting way to travel" and you find hundreds of articles about the impact of cruis ships on the environment. Have a nice journey!

I think if there are more than 20 or 30 people on your boat there is a good chance it is trashy.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. Hoi Polloi are entitled to enjoy themselves. But I wouldn't want them to be doing it near me.

How is 200 people on a Viking river cruise different than 200 people in your hotel?

Because you’re not forced to spend any time with the people in your hotel? I literally never meet anyone in my hotel.

You must be so proud!

No one used that language specifically but it was one of those vacation things you could just tell people were looking down their nose at. What’s the deal with this? Are cruises trashy? Fun? Have you ever been on one, what was your take on the experience?

As I grow older, I’m starting to find that my family can be snooty about some things so I truly am asking free from any judgement. Have I had an unfairly negative perception of cruises?

I think you have an unfairly positive perception of your parents. They don’t sound like good people.

What are the meaningful ways classy people engage with the locals on their vacations to the Hamptons or Kiawah?

I don’t care about “authenticity” but I hate crowds. So big cruises and big resorts lose a lot of their appeal from that.

I think you’re confusing people wanting to go on an adventure vs relax without feeling like cattle. Those are two different trips.

The tenants of a solid upbringing…work hard, do well in school, treat others nicely and cruises are “low rent.”

Tenets.

The old money people I know don’t even do “adventure vacations” except maybe in college/early 20’s. They want to be surrounded by people like them and good help and that’s all.
