Good neighborhood for young families in NoVa?

Why? Georgetown is a stage set/tourist trap that peaked in the 80s.

We are in Middleridge but I would happily live in those other neighborhoods. You can find some lots that are .35 - CCV has some that are up to . 5 acre. Civic Associations, but no HOAs, in all three of these neighborhoods. (We see that as a plus.)

The houses aren't brand new but many have been renovated, including some with additions. No 3 car garages.

So it really just comes down to whether you are ok with an older home and in exchange get a fabulous neighborhood. Our neighborhood has tons of community events (easter egg hunt, halloween parade, pet parade, community yard sales, home & garden tours, feed the firefighters) and I am sure CCV and KPW have similar events as well. People are out on walks all the time and stop to chat if you are out. Block parties and impromptu neighborhood gatherings abound. Lots of kids out playing and going from house to house. Neighbors genuinely care about each other and keep an eye on the elderly, families with new babies or sick love ones, etc.

We have thought about moving to a "nicer" house but value what we have here so staying put. Another area to explore is Burke Centre (22015) - again, the house are nothing spectacular but you are buying into a family-friendly neighborhood.

Good luck!

I agree with this poster. A lot of the homes in Fairfax and Burke that feed into the Robinson or Woodson HS districts are very family friendly. There are some neighborhoods towards Clifton or Fairfax Station that are still neighborhoods but have larger lots too.

lol "diversity" in Del Ray. Rich, white, liberal, 30-somethings, strollers, dogs.

So diverse that they're rebranding North Mount Vernon and Chirilagua as "Del Ray North" to let people know it's ok to live there now.

I’m sure there are exceptions, but I have found that the friendliest and most inclusive families live in neighborhoods with older/more modest homes on smaller lots or in townhomes. DCUM turns its nose up at the schools these neighborhoods feed into. Fox Mill is a great example of this. They are just more down to earth. We live in a neighborhood with “highly sought after” schools and it’s much more of a mix… some nice people but some who think their sh*t doesn’t stink. If I could do it over again I might move somewhere like Fox Mill. It seems like a much easier place for kids and parents to make friends because it’s not filled with a bunch of strivers sizing each other up and competing with one another.

Totally agree.

Yup what a troll

I live in DR.

My neighbors on one side are black and across the street are Chinese.

And there is only 1 stroller age kid on our block.

And while it has nothing to do with diversity, there are indeed lots of dogs. So yeah I guess I’d you hate dogs (and apparently children) than it’s definitely not for you.

Burke Centre - great community with five pools, walking trails, playgrounds, excellent schools and commuting options

I'm in Del Ray and the house two down from me is an old black couple whose 7 grandkids live in PG with their respective single moms but they all commit residency fraud and attend ACPS.

How's that for diversity? Black and criminal!

What if it's true?

Can one really be racist scum for acknowledging facts?

I don't think so.

Unless your kids go to public school. Then it's a young family nightmare from hell.

What moron commits fraud to get IN to ACPS? 99% of students are doing tit the other way around.

It’s amazing how this false trope perpetuates itself on here.

While the great school ratings are highly flawed, take a look at the breakdown of the ACPS rankings by ethnicity breakdown. You will see 9 or 10/10 rankings when it’s stratified that way. The kids that unfortunately don’t do as well are those that are likely not raised in native English-speaking households. They’d unfortunately have trouble at most schools. To the credit of the local school system,, one of the elementary schools actually has a dual immersion program so the Spanish-speaking kids can help the English speaking kids learn Spanish and vice versa. Parents love it.

I tend to think of a ACPs as on par with the NWDC and SS public schools. Highly diverse with several unique programs.
Perfect? No. But a kid who is semi-motivated and/or with involved parents will likely do quite well.

Why? I used to live in Georgetown when our first was young. The rats and the syringes in the playground were the two things that got us to the suburbs, fast.
