There are stronger CA schools for CS than Caltech.

STanford is more known for CS and MIT ofcourse on East course. Plenty of other great options as well (would NOT take Caltech)

Stats: 1600. Probable Valedictorian at a pretty large public HS, 10 APs. Average public school, no charter/STEM magnet, etc.

ECs: Robotics, CS competitions, Internships, Community Service.

Awards: Except for CS competitions, I’d say most of her distinctions were unique. She had around 30 to choose from, so did not add things like NMSF, NHS, PVSA. There’s a page on the MIT admissions blog that lists possible distinctions — she definitely used that, although I do not know exactly which ones she put on her application.

Absolutely stunned! She has worked very hard, but we are well aware that there were equally (maybe even more qualified) applicants that did not get in. My DD did not get into her ED school.

She only did what she wanted in HS — did not want to take on more stress than was needed.

Your DD is highly qualified - I will all kids that got in over mine were so impressive. Congratulations to your family.

Well deserved - congrats to your family!

You have to be a bit of a masochist to go to CalTech. Wealthy kids who want a prestige education - but don't want to put in the insane work - will opt for Stanford/HYP/Berkeley before going to CalTech.

CalTech has a frightening reputation as an intellectual grinder.

But a great record at producing science intellectuals.

I was told that MIT took 14 from TJ this year - nice to hear given how many TJ kids are bumped from VT and UVA these days...

Tons of west coasters at MIT.

Yes! Niece from West coast accepted early at Caltech and MIT, accepted and committed MIT! So excited for her!

Thoughts?

Pre med?? MIT is the last place to go, unless she’s into biomed eng, research and md/phd and an academic career.

Pre-med program in MIT is very challenging however most of students in pre-med got great results. Pre-med counselors in MIT are doing their best to support students. Weed out class of pre-med is organic chemistry. Most of premed students in MIT take orgo in Harvard. Its one is way easier than MIT’s. And other premed classes are pretty o.k. I think MIT is fine for premed students, too. My DD’s friends who are in premed track have med school admissions at least 2 so far.

I love the image of MIT students treating Harvard as a community college for organic chemistry.

Idea of taking Organic Chemistry in Harvard comes from MIT pre-med counselors. They recommend to take orgo from Harvard to get A.

+1 harder to get a C than an A at Harvard. Massive grade inflation there.

Its because UVA VT assume they are being thought of as safety schools from TJ. Applicants who are overqualified get rejected (more often WL but rejected too)

Agree. They want to know if you are interested in staying on the waitlist and actually attending.

No, it’s because of VT’s Presidents’s push for first generation and URM to 40 percent of student body = social engineering of classes.

And then to add on the cost of med school- way over 300k at that point.
