Anyone think we might be better off without Home Rule in DC?

Some days (not all) I agree with you. Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different outcomes, and 50 years of home rule has shown me that the District is incompetently inept at its own self-governance.

I thought with Tony Williams and Adrian Fenty we had turned a leaf but we've regressed a lot in the last decade.

All Americans -- whether they have Congressional representation or not and regardless of which state in which they live -- should support DC statehood if they believe in no taxation without representation. You either support that fundamental American value or you don't.

There are alternatives to DC statehood that allow for representation, such as DC becoming part of Maryland.

It’s not a viable alternative if neither Maryland nor DC want it.

But the 50 states get to decide not just Maryland. If the states offer to return DC to Maryland, and DC residents oppose it, then they really don’t want representation.

How breathtakingly racist

This. We're back to the Barry years, this time with legalized drug use on every corner.

No, the 50 states do not get to decide whether to shove DC back into Maryland or not. If Maryland doesn’t want it, Maryland doesn’t have to take it.

Yep. Exactly this. Most of the renaissance of the city is attributable to Tony Williams. Adrian kept it going (though he had his corrupt pay-to-pay cronies). We have been backsliding since. Millennials do not remember when 14th between U and Logan was boarded up businesses, prostitutes and drug dealers, but I do. Or H Street---another boarded up strip. Union Market was the old Eckington wholesale district selling hot dogs in bulk to the roach coach carts on the National Mall (there were certainly no food trucks then). Most residents west of Rock Creek Park sent their kids to private school past elementary (and many even refused to send their kids to public elementary). The elementary schools on Capitol Hill were non-performing.

Typically as you have more gentrification, more white elected officials and better governance. But the dc council whites have such little respect for themselves, they are just fine with black crime- they think their constituents deserve to be attacked by blacks and have their property stolen bc of equity and systemic racism. So I would say yes, end home rule. These cowardly whites have so little self respect, they can’t protect themselves or the citizens.

Except for the bolded assumption (which I agree is racist), I agree with the rest of this statement. And none of the policies endorsed by Allen, Nadeau, Silverman et al. actually lead to improving anything for anyone EXCEPT the criminals, and even then they are doing juvenile offenders a disservice by absolving them of consequences for their actions until their late 20s, at which point their violence will result in being jailed for their 20s, 30s and 40s, if not for life.

I hate the far right Christian fascists who have taken over the Republican Party, but I have an equal amount of contempt for the far left.

Yes, the fascists and those who oppose them are equally as bad. I don't want anyone to interrupt my coffee and crumpets. I am very smart and not at all part of the problem.

You’re not wrong, but mocking people who are inclined to lean left for not being left enough is part of why D will get absolutely crushed in the next election in the privacy of the voting booth.

Mitch McConnell has represented Kentucky in the Senate my entire life and Kentucky routinely ranks at the bottom of state lists for education, incomes and wealth. The people of Kentucky continue to vote for him without the outcome changing so maybe they should not have the right to vote for senators anymore? The outcome has remained the same
