"If there is a major resurgence of the pandemic, the political will for the harshest virus mitigation measures has largely evaporated even in the most liberal parts of the country, which have been the most open to restrictions, experts say.

“The threshold to shut things down is going to be much higher than it was,” said Robert Wachter, who chairs the Department of Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco. “One of the durable takeaway lessons is that the closing of schools is really a terrible thing to do and should be avoided at all costs.”"

Amen. Kids need in-person school. We will be ok. Mask and vaccinate.

Different teacher.

Kids don't "need" in-person school. It is a "nice to have" not a "must have." Do parents "need" childcare? Yes. That's the reason why schools may stay open even after kids and teachers start to die.

There is no vaccine yet that is effective against Omicron.

Perhaps you’re trolling or just burned out. I’m a little toasty this year and am often grappling with how to work with students post remote learning (and my kids are a relatively privileged group but are still behind), but I can’t imagine any teacher who hasn’t given up completely making such a statement.

Different teacher here-
In-person instruction is a nice to have, not a need. The only needs out there are: food, water, and air….and I’ll through in shelter and clothing.

You aren't a teacher. Nice try though.

The only thing certain is that there are going to be variants in the future that are going to elude the vaccines available at that time. Just like flu right now.

We are now at the point where vaccines dramatically cut down the risk of severe illness and death. That is the best we can do. Just need to go back to living normally - with precautions like wearing a mask if situation demands.

-Coming from the most liberal left wing person possible.

I'm sorry to hear that having your kids home every day for almost two years has melted your brain. It's understandable. And preventable, by sending your kids to school, which is where they belong.

I love having them at home and will miss them when they go back. When people like you can behave more responsible or the schools handle covid better, we'll consider returning. I'm sorry you don't love your kids enough to have them home. Maybe you shouldn't have had kids if you cannot handle having them around.

Schools are safe. For kids and for their family. If you want testing, they're doing that too. Your absurd post shows the deleterious effects of being locked down for extended periods of time.

No, schools are not safe. Most aren't following the CDC guidelines including testing and social distancing. Most have 35+ students to a classroom and in MS and HS those kids rotate classes. Many are only doing opt in testing and its random so out of 1000 students maybe 50 are tested and its the same kids all the time as any parent who is engaging in risky behavior isn't going to opt in.

Thank god for this thing called a vaccine, which you and your kid can get to protect you, assuming he or she is over 5.

Don't listen to the crazies, they have no understanding of history or how viruses work. Eventually potency will decline and it will just become another virus that circulates without so many deadly effects.

Schools aren't going to completely close again, especially the smart ones which are requiring masks and vaccinations. The others? Sure, when they don't have enough staff to teach.

Trying to stop mosquitos with a chain link fence isn’t exactly smart. It’s about control.

+1 My 16 yr old DD is vax'd and goes to a crowded high school. She also gets a PCR test at school several times a week, along with all the other kids who play in band. All year, I've only heard of two positive tests and DD has always been negative. I'm completely comfortable with her at school. DL was awful for her and I sure hope we never have to go through that again.

We are 100% comfortable in-person. We were last spring too. Cases have been super low and no spread.

This is not necessarily true. Diseases like Smallpox and Polio never declined in their ability to cause death and sever, lasting damage, which is why finding ways to create immunity to them (cowpox, variolation, eventually vaccines) for them was so urgent. Other serious diseases (leprosy, rabies, measles, diphtheria, bubonic plague, tetanus…) we have also managed to control with vaccines or effective treatments. Public Heath measures are also critical (toilets and plumbing, soap and washing hands before food prep, mosquito nets…). Using a multi-faceted approach to experiment and find the most effective means for controlling each health risk is super-important.

Thank god Covid is such a minor inconvenience for almost everyone who catches it. We lucked out.

That woald be so much fun to relive those fun memories all over once more!

I think people should mentally prepare for the possibility if not likelihood.

Weird I didn’t know kindergarten started with 4 year olds

No, but how do you protect young children if this impacts American kids too. Valid question.

South Frica is only about 22% vaxxed. You can be pretty sure the aren prioritizing under 18s. Our 5+s now have the option o be vaccinated. Big difference.

Danish kids in this age group are about 75% vaxxed. All the hopium that we are somehow not going to be affected is wishful thinking. Are kids going to be in N95s all day? It’s airborne and very transmissible.

Start by getting vaccinated. We aren't going to continue to give kids less because adults refuse to get vaccinated.

Triple vaxxed and I agree with you. I still think we need to think about how to protect kids right now while we have time to plan.

Who cares if you are triple vaxxed. You can still get and spread covid.

Fall kids start at age 4.
