She is pushing this topic. Why is that? Don’t you want to know who is amplifying these “issues” and why?

Kids experimenting with sex isn’t “porn”.

Giving them books with very explicit pictures of sexual acts being performed by young people is. Giving them books that talk about a ten year old performing graphic sexual acts on an adult and vice versa is pedophilia. Last I heard, pedophilia is illegal.

Maybe she is pushing the topic because she knows it needs to be pushed. She is just reporting what happened at the meeting and providing the evidence. You have problems with that? If it is so harmless why does it bother you?

It was not on an adult. Did you read the full passage?

She's pushing falsehoods. Why are you OK with that?

I think you better go read it.

I did. The “concerning” passages were about two fourth graders experimenting with sex.

Certainly not pedophilia.

But I mean, the book was a little over the top, no?

This. A book about ten year old boys sucking each other is COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATE!!! Child on child abuse is a real form of abuse and this regularizes it. In fact, statistically, child on child abuse is relatively common. The book should not be on SCHOOL book shelves. FCPS you need to draw a line on some things. Draw this line.

Read the rest of the book. An adult having sex with a child is pedophilia.

Which characters do you think are adults vs children?

Seems like you had trouble following…

It’s not “abuse” if both are willing participants.

Why should the subject of pedophilia be banned from high school libraries? Teens are aware of this topic. Just because it occurs in a book doesn’t mean it is being condoned.

So a kid who doesn’t know enough about sex and his body to even know what is going on can give consent? Methinks not.

This book, or at least the part of the book being discussed, is specifically about normalizing gay sex by describing gay sex in graphic detail as one small part of the book. As someone noted in another part of this thread, being gay is about more than just explicit (underage) gay sex -- isn't it? Is this the best way to support LGBTQIA+?

And, I am a defender of free speech--but this is a school library where the readers are minors.

They also have choice to NOT check the book out. I feel no need to protect my HS from the word di*k. The kids are watching porn on the bus.

This is not a good thing.

+1. Technically not allowed and forces kids around to be exposed whether they want to or not.

I can’t believe some PPs are all “a slight majority of high school kids have had sex, NBD!” What about kids who haven’t and don’t want to read smut in their literary fiction? That was me all through HS.[/quote

Right. And I really think football is boring and I don't like it. So... I didn't check out the football-related library books from the library. And before you shout "It's not the same thing!" there are people that think football should be banned completely because of brain injuries. So, yes. Public school libraries in a country that supports free press and speech will contain many things. Some things I don't like, some things you don't like.

I think a book and its content is the last thing people need to worry about. There are more important issues to get worked up about.

No. That is how this happens. People say “it’s no big deal.” Some things are a big deal. So two fourth graders are found engaging in oral sex in school bathroom after reading a boom they found in the library. Should we wait for that before it is a big deal? Or is that not a big deal either?

I imagine a large % of kids “play doctor” or some variation as part of normal human development. It’s really no big deal if all participants are willing.

What’s next? Masturbation should be discouraged?

And…this book is at HSs, not ESs, so not sure how your theoretical fourth graders are reading it.

What’s wrong with normalizing gay sex? Or gay sexual awakening?

Apparently FCPS is going to take a harder look at whether books normalizing underage gay sex belong on their library bookshelves. Hope this doesn't trigger Frisch too much.
