I have regrettably lived a very sedentary lifestyle the last few years. Noticing a significant amount of extra weight and general “crunchiness” in my body at the young age of 33, I went to a few CorePower yoga classes and liked them. For those more experienced than I am, would hot yoga classes be a good way to get back in shape and lose 20+ lbs? Not looking for immediate results, just not sure yoga is known for weight loss as opposed to just stretching. TIA! |
You won’t burn as many calories as running, but it’s a good whole body workout and incorporates weight training, which is key for long term fitness.
Hot yoga will absolutely tone and slim your body… as long as you are overhauling your diet as well. (You can’t outrun the fork.) |
Yoga is a whole lifestyle change. And losing weight is more about diet (caloric deficit) than excerising. Exercising just makes it happen faster...but as long as you stay in a deficit.
I would not jump into hot yoga right away. I say this as a 20+ year yoga practitioner and instructor. I would reccomend you go back to Corepower or similar, do 3-6 months there, then add in hot yoga 1x a week. Ideally, you would be spending one day a week in a sauna as well, starting with 5-7 minutes and building up to 30. I've seen too many people jump into hot yoga after years away and either 1) injure themselves and blame the instructor/class 2) puke and never come back and 3) faint and never come back. Personally, I do not find hot yoga particularly beneficial. In yoga, the heat should be built internally, through breath connection to your Sun Salutations A&B along with the connecting Vinyasas. The room should be a comfortable temperature, neither too cold nor too hot, because your internal fire (tapas) will get you sweating soon enough. |
Get in better shape than you are currently in, sure, but to lose weight you need to diet. Exercise for health. Diet for fat loss. |
