My daughter has very sensitive ears and even the most “allergy free” earrings we’ve found irritate her. Before I try to convince her to just give up on piercings I thought I would crowdsource for new ideas.
She’s almost 12 and has had her ears pierced for almost 5 years so it isn’t a new healing issue. |
My daughter has similar sensitivities and can only tolerate 14k gold or better. Nickle mixed in is probably the culprit. |
Implant grade titanium or 14K gold. They are pricey. Go to Craig Pokes U. |
We have had luck with the medical grade titanium earrings from here

14k gold or better. Can wear white gold if she likes the look of silver. There’s some affordable options here.

On a daily basis I wear the studs that they use in piercing guns. You can get them online or at beauty supply shops like Sally's.
I buy the birthstone sets for a bit of variety. |
+1 This is where we buy earrings - medical grade titanium and plastic, although we don't keep the plastic earrings in for more than one day. |
If OP's child is as sensitive as she says, 14k gold will not work. They frequently use something nickel-based in the solder. |
My daughter got pierced at Craig's (with their titanium earrings) and had problem after problem. She would not heal. Finally we tried different earrings that we purchased after much research from here: https://sensitively-yours.com/
So I both highly recommend the Sensitively Yours ones and think that there was some issue--not sure what--with the titanium ones my daughter was wearing. Just to flag titanium may not be the answer. I now wear the Sensitively Yours ones too and my earlobes no longer get itchy. Hope this helps. |
I wear 24k earring that often get bent out of shape or platinum if I want a silver look |
Titanium is the most inert and the only thing I can wear. Etsy and even Amazon now have many options. I used to have to go to piercing/tattoo places. Make sure it is implant grade titanium. |
14k gold is the only thing that works for me. That, or titanium. I thought I just couldn’t wear earrings until after 20 years of no earrings I finally got my ears re-pierced at a tattoo place that used titanium posts; and then once they healed, bought a pair of gold plated earrings. I never remove them and never have an issue. |
We actually had her ears pierced with titanium, and that took forever to heal, over a year. I don’t think titanium will work for her either, as we’ve tried putting in the earrings she had her ears pierced with and even they cause a reaction. I will look into some of these options, everything we’ve tried has been “ Nickel Free”. Maybe the plastic will work?
Poor kid. She just has sensitive skin overall, she reacts hugely to bug bites and sunburns even with olive skin when the rest of the family tans. |
Have the earrings you tried all been studs? For me, not only do the earrings have to be gold or titanium, but my ears can’t handle studs. Something about that round piece that goes in the back to hold the stud in place just doesn’t work for my ears. I have some nice diamond studs that I can only wear for a few hours at a time (so special occasions only) before my ears start to swell. One of my kids has this issue too, interestingly the other does not. Might be something for you to look into. |
Neither 14K gold nor platinum worked for me. ![]() |
