What did Fauci actually do wrong?

He's the target of a lot of right-wing outrage and thinking Fauci is evil is part of conservative identity. The criticism doesn't seem very thoughtful or nuanced and doesn't seem to have much of a grasp of how science actually works. It's infantile commentary like "he said X in April 2020 but now he's saying Y" or saying he implemented lockdowns when he never had the power to implement them.

The criticism also seems unfair because it suggests Fauci is partisan. He's a dedicated public servant who worked with presidents of both parties and presidents Reagan, Bush I and Bush II had no "political" issue with him.

Are they are any substantive criticisms of Fauci?

He did lie when he said people did not need mask. He knew this was untrue and still makes that claim at the very beginning.

Fauci was loose with facts, if not willing to say downright lies, when it was politically advantageous. We saw this early on when he said high-quality masks wouldn't work, when in reality he didn't want people buying them out. And we saw it later with talk about vaccine-induced herd immunity thresholds, which he later acknowledged was carefully tailored to encourage vaccination.

Also the second point here is basic public health strategy.
