Sourdough - is it a "better" bread?

Anonymous
Trying to lose some weight and focusing on my diet. I've been making homemade sourdough for the past year and my family loves it. I will have a slice of it at dinner some nights, or at lunch with a salad. I don't otherwise eat a lot of bread. Do you think sourdough is a "better" bread for losing weight?

Yes, without a doubt. Especially if you make it yourself at home.

Yes. My son was having stomach issues and we switched to sourdough for him.

Better gut health, for 1.

Any bread (really, any food period) that you make at home will be healthier than something you buy at the store.

Sourdough has the benefit of having practically no ingredients — usually just flour, water, yeast, and salt — whereas other breads tend to have sugar, milk, oil, etc. So I think sourdough might be better for weight loss since you’re not getting added fats and sugars even at a low level. I also find it very filling so I eat less of it than other breads.

My teenager recently started up her own sourdough operation a few weeks ago. I had no idea it was such a chemistry experiment. It's nice to learn that it has health benefits as well.

Beware that some sourdough breads in supermarkets are not sourdough.

These faux sourdoughs use “artificial sourdough flavor” to trick you.

What defines a real sourdough is the use of wild, indigenous yeasts from real sourdough cultures.

I also make sourdough bread. For me it's probably worse for my diet because it's delicious so I eat more. I would never snack on store bread loaves. They just aren't that good. But mine fresh out of the oven is amazing. Also makes good pizza crust.

Yes, homemade sourdough is the best bread you can eat, especially if you are using whole wheat flour for part of it.

I use a lot of white whole wheat flour (same nutritional profile as traditional whole wheat but bakes more like all-purpose white flour). My bread dough takes 800g of flour and I usually use 400 white, 300 white whole wheat, and 100 whole wheat.

Yes. Also flagging the excellent Alavarado sprouted sourdough you can find frozen at Moms and Harris Teeter. Sprouted bread is very high fiber low sugar, Ezekiel bread is not sourdough but also very good.

That's a big loaf! What kind of pan do you use? Mine is usually 500g flour which I bake in the cast iron Dutch oven. I like 300 white bread flour, 200 whole wheat. My starter is fed whole wheat, white or traditional, whichever I have on hand.

YES, and with whole flour, even better! But don't eat more of it, obviously.

Ha. Indeed. It is the Ken Forkish hybrid recipe and it makes TWO loaves. I use two Dutch ovens.

I snack on it too! It’s my downfall, but it’s delicious and I’m not a kid myself to say it’s healthy because I actually eat more sourdough than I ever would regular bread.
