Carnivore diet

Has anyone done it? What was your experience?

One of my co-workers has been on a carnivore diet for a couple of years now. She claims that it is great and she is feeling amazing. She doesn't look any different to me. The idea of just meat grosses me out.

I can't imagine anyone living healthy or long on this diet.

My cousin did it. He ended up with high cholesterol, fatty liver, and dental issues from fricking SCURVY.

To be fair, he's not a fan of chicken, turkey, or fish, so his diet was beef and pork. Perhaps those who eat all types of meat, especially the leaner types, would have better results.

Sounds like a good way to have low energy because of a complete lack of carbohyrates floating around your system.

Everyone I know that has done this has very little success with any even moderately strenous exercise program.

DH did it and made sure to eat liver, take supplements, etc. He lost 20 lbs in 3 weeks then hit a plateau. He has kept the weight off but can't stand the diet anymore.

Dietary carbohydrates are easier, but your body can make its own energy with sufficient food. And people with severe epilepsy manage to get by with what is essentially a carnivore diet. I wouldn’t do it unless I had to, but it’s not like the human body can’t derive nutrition from a variety of sources. That’s one of the reasons why we’re so successful as a species.

For sure, but to intentionally put yourself into that situation without a need to isn’t particularly productive. Most people that try this aren’t successful in having anywhere near the energy system return as you would with a normal diet that includes dietary carbs.

I do get a chuckle frequently when a “fat adapted runner” blows up during multiple marathon attempts and posts about it on Reddit.

I had spent almost a year eating a mostly healthy Mediterranean diet (with some cheating) and focused on fiber and diversity of plant foods consumed for optimal gut biome health.

Then I watched a documentary that convinced me to try a keto diet for more rapid weight loss. My body instantly rebelled, my gut is not happy on a mostly fats and meat diet. My gut just really loves bengal gram, I guess - and lots of other kinds of carbs.

I have largely purged refined sugar, added sugars and ultra processed foods. When I am driven to cheat my body makes me pay, it really doesn’t like the taste or negative nutritive effects of UPFs and I suffer headaches, restless sleep and other side effects that are correlated to high sodium and poor nutrition foods.

I’m going to be 54 later this year and I’ve finally got to the point I really want to feel good, and I get that it means fueling my body with a wholesome range of nutrient dense foods, and lots of walking in sunshine, and good quality and quantity of sleep.

I just have to kick the last of the mental stuff that makes me order pizza instead of making it healthy at home.

It's disgusting and horrific even to consider this. If you are trying to die prematurely, go for it.

I just got my blood labs. I am 53 and eat what I cook 85% of the time: peas, beans, meat, potatoes, mostly home-cooked meals with a little bit of meat for flavor and lots of veggies, and yes, a lot of boiled potatoes.
Blood work is all good, glucose is awesome, and good weight too. HDL is great, too.
Enough with this insanity, eat regular meals like your great-grandparents did! I even eat homemade pies and still have awesome labs.
