Tween Easter Dress

Anonymous
My (very tall) sixth grade daughter lives in athleisure, but we have an upcoming Easter brunch with the grandparents at their country club, so need to figure out a cute, age-appropriate but also venue appropriate Easter dress. She's sized out of most kids lines by height (so that rules out Janie and Jack, J.Crew, Boden, and Tea Collection, our former go-tos), and the days when I could sell her on cutsey - or really anything I pick out - are long gone, sadly. She's mostly into it being comfy, as she's not super fashion oriented. So, fellow parents of DCUM, where do you shop for this kind of thing? Totally fine with online shopping, btw.

Does she have to wear a dress? Why can't she wear a nice shirt and pants instead?

She’s going to wear this one time so don’t spend a lot. Tell her to pick out a dress from Old Navy online in a solid color. They will blend to dress up more easily. It will be good enough for the dinner.

Old navy poster and my daughter wore the shorter version of this one to a dinner we had to go to last summer. Paired with shoes and a necklace it worked fine and she said it was comfortable. Same thing, she only wears athletic wear and only wore it once. https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=863591012&cid=15292&pcid=15292&vid=1&cpos=23&cexp=2926&kcid=CategoryIDs%3D15292&cvar=26331&ctype=Listing&cpid=res24031904392042361848076#pdp-page-content

I third Old Navy. I realized last week that my DD had nothing for Easter. I ordered her this: https://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=863521022&cid=15292&pcid=15292&vid=1&cpos=15&cexp=2926&kcid=CategoryIDs%3D15292&cvar=26330&ctype=Listing&cpid=res24031904669165595280549&ccam=31840#pdp-page-content

And she’s going to wear a cardigan over it.

My 6th grade DD is also an athleisure kid and I just bought a skort dress and a romper from Hollister so that she has something nicer to wear for events this spring/summer. She is not as tall as the models so they don’t fit her as short, lol.

So funny - I was going to suggest Old Navy, too. Solid colors are the way to go, and this looked really good on. Comfy and not revealing:

DD insisted on wearing "cheer shorts" underneath dresses until recently. Again, made her feel more comfortable in case it got breezy etc.

Shirt and pants are fine (as are jumpsuits)! I should have been more clear that I meant dressy outfit, not necessarily dress. (I just default to them because they're one and done so find them easiest.)

Super helpful, thank you. I'm going to throw a bunch of options on a pinboard and have her take a look after school. (I feel like a personal shopper, pinning selections for her to review, but it's what works best for us).

LOL. I feel you. The pinboard is a great idea. I can't believe I hadn't thought of that! DD and I do a lot of texts back and forth, which becomes hard to follow.

And as much as I complain sometimes about the "personal shopper" thing, it's turned out to be a surprisingly fun way to connect. DD isn't fancy or especially into clothes, but she's always had strong preferences and her own look, and I like supporting that.

P.S. Now that she's 15, our roles seem to be reversing. YMMV, but it's been fun here! Rather than me being the one responsible for sending her ideas (with her responding back yea or nay), she's been doing more of the looking on-line and sending me the ideas so I can be the one to say yea or nay. Thankfully, she seems to have learned how to hit the sweet spot of cute/appropriate/price, so I rarely need to veto anything. It's more of a "Love it, but don't you already have something like that?" or "Love it, but what do you think about this one, which is similar, but you may like more because of X, Y, or Z." And I've taught her to handle returns for things that can go back to the mall or other in-person stores. Much easier!

OP indicated that her kid lives in athleisure and isn't into fashion, and as the parent of a similar kid, mine would not wear any of these in a million years.

OP, last year my daughter needed something dressy, and I got a cute jumpsuit from Target. Old Navy also had some cute ones.
