I had a dream

Wouldn't the local soccer world be a better place if girls travel soccer was run exclusively by ECNL and boys travel soccer run exclusively soccer MLS?

(No GA, No Boys ECNL)

It would be nice if the ECNL would place current GA teams into their appropriate tier of ECNL (ECNL R?).

MLS needs a third tier below MLS Next (MLS R). The current boys ECNL clubs could vie for MLS next and MLS R spots.

It probably will never happen in my lifetime but one can always dream.

MLS is the US men's league. The best local boys team is DC United Academy. They pay for the travel expenses etc of their players.

The women's equivalent is the NWSL. They can barely afford to pay their pro players a living wage and are no longer involved in youth soccer development (at least locally). The Washington Spirit pro team has several US National Team players on its roster.

The top girls travel league is ECNL which remains pay to play but produces most of the best US women's players.

A few years back ECNL tried to get into boys soccer and the boys development academies led to the creation of girls development academies (the Washington Spirit briefly had one). When the girls DA failed it was renamed the GA and has recently started adding anyone who wants to join in.

Half of the discussions on this soccer forum are related at least tangentially to this history.

(Europe and South America have better systems for creating men's soccer players and catching up on the women's front as well).

Your dream could have happened if ECNL added all the DA clubs after DA blew up.

But ECNL chose to be petty and only allow certain clubs back in.

The leftovers created GA and this is why there's both ECNL and GA for high level girls soccer.

Again ECNL could have made it all one big umbrella after DA blew up but chose not to. Now they have a competitor league called GA.

ECNL went into boys started in 2017 and was a direct competitor to boys DA. It never really gained traction. This is because with boys playing professionally is higher priority than playing in college.

When DA blew up boys DA became MLS Next. MLSN is more appealing than ECNL because players have the option of playing professionally or in college. Also it's considered higher tier than ECNL because of the Acadamies.

So again just like with GA, ECNL created the "problem" that you wish didn't exist. (Boys ecnl)

Ok great ECNL “created” both “problems”.

ECNL can eliminate the GA problem just by showing that they are an irrelevant League. It would be nice if they would offer to place the remaining GA clubs in ECNL or ECNL R, whichever is appropriate based on their team quality and remaining players/coaches.

They should eliminate by ECNL boys problem by realizing that it is not a good look for ECNL to be running a second rate boys league. They should talk to MLSN about having all their boys clubs join as they will not be able to compete.

You should lay off the ECNL Kool-aid.

These are businesses that are competing against each other.

With ECNL girls they could have done what you're asking for when DA blew up and chose not to. ECNL boys is an afterthought to MLS Next / Boys DA.

In Your make a wish dream you basically stumbled right into the main argument the #GAFTH clique are making on why ECNL would be first to fold simply cause it’s doing too much with trying to be a product for two different enough pathways. MLSN for - GA for girls. For our first timer on here which model makes sense to some one who knows nothing?

MLS already has a tier below MLS NEXT, it's NAL where the MLSN have their second teams play.

MLS and MLS Next have absolutely nothing to do with NAL

NAL is something created by a few clubs due to the ECNL rules regarding 2nd teams.

MLSN and NAL are completely separate leagues. The reason MLSN clubs put their 2nd team in NAL is because ECNL won't allow clubs to make boys ECNL teams 2nd behind MLSN. Clubs that have done this in the past get girls ECNL taken away or boys ECNL taken away the following season.

Tell me again how ECNL is the "solution" and not the problem.

Purely from a business perspective what ECNL is doing is illegal. Imagine if Hulu ever discovered that you had Disney+ that they'd drop your subscription. Or imagine of you wanted Netflix (girls ECNL) you have to buy Hulu (boys ECNL).

No idea what's going on with the formatting.

The more you know about youth soccer and leagues the less you want to know.

It's confusing and stupid. The problem is many people don't care about the details, history, and background. They just go after what the internet knuckleheads view the "best" which they primarily define by wins.

Unfortunately for the kids going for wins over everything else rewards the early developers and hurts skills development for everyone because of defined positions.

There was an old commercial that said, "An educated consumer is our best customer"

This horrible pay-to-play environment filled with parents chasing after the Jones's and chasing labels and worthless medals/trophies is all because of the vast collective ignorance.

So there's no end in sight.
The few who know and care to learn will continue to develop the few quality players.
