MLS is the US men's league. The best local boys team is DC United Academy. They pay for the travel expenses etc of their players.

The women's equivalent is the NWSL. They can barely afford to pay their pro players a living wage and are no longer involved in youth soccer development (at least locally). The Washington Spirit pro team has several US National Team players on its roster.

The top girls travel league is ECNL which remains pay to play but produces most of the best US women's players.

A few years back ECNL tried to get into boys soccer and the boys development academies led to the creation of girls development academies (the Washington Spirit briefly had one). When the girls DA failed it was renamed the GA and has recently started adding anyone who wants to join in.

Half of the discussions on this soccer forum are related at least tangentially to this history.

(Europe and South America have better systems for creating men's soccer players and catching up on the women's front as well).
