My family was discussing school field trips, and I mentioned that we went to the Philip Morris cigarette factory in high school. Students who were over 16 and teachers received a free pack, while the rest of us got oversized pens covered in brand labels. Until I saw the incredulous stares of my kids, it never occurred to me what an inappropriate place that was to take high schoolers.
Surely I'm not the only one. What field trips did you or your kids take that make you wonder what on earth the adults-in-charge were thinking? |
| What year was this? |
LOL! Are you from Richmond? I am, graduated high school in 1990 so basically grew up in the 80s. We went to a bunch of plantations as field trips, including Stratford Hall (Lee’s birthplace). We didn’t go to Philip Morris though. |
No answer. Why start thread if you won’t answer basic question? |
Where did you live? Probably somewhere that the tobacco industry had lobbying clout. They definitely try to recruit future addicts from kids, and have been outed for that in court. Now vaping is following the same well worn route. Capitalism at its most ugly. |

I feel like factories were a very popular field trip when I was a kid. I went to the Wonder Bread factory as a kid and got a free loaf. Having my very own loaf of bread! THAT was very exciting. I ate bread for dinner two nights in a row.
Also went to the Tootsie Roll factory, which was, hands-down, one of the most depressing places ever. I think in my head, I had visions of Willy Wonka, so the contrast was stark. |
| Is someone with dcum starting threads while posing to keep people on? Same thing with the troll threads? In an effort to continue grabbing interest. |
| We took a field trip to a juvenile detention center when I was a 7th grader in Alabama!! I don't know if they were trying to scare us straight, but between that and our abstinence education, I'm SO glad we moved to DC the next year! |
I’m from NJ and a school trip to VA in the early to mid 80s included a tour of the Philip Morris factory! My kids think it’s hilarious that anyone found that appropriate. |
|
I’m the OP. This was mid 1980s and my school was about 2 hours from Richmond.
My own kid went to a sewage treatment plant, and given the choice, I’d rather see cigarettes. |
| i grew up in NJ and went to the hostess factory and got a box of twinkies, best field trip ever. |
Same, we took a trip in HS to the Montgomery County Detention Center on Seven Locks Road. This was in the 80’s and I remember the inmates hooting and hollering when we walked through. We also went to one of those all women gyms and took a Jazzercise class for a PE field trip. It was so corny. |

DW’s elementary school field trip was to the local brewery, so see how beer is brewed.
In the cafeteria at the end of the tour, each child received a bottle of lemonade. And yes: this was in Germany. |
It's been 8 minutes. |
| Mutter Museum in Philly! Hideous medical oddities. It was a blast. |
