This NYT article on the return of massive pants got me thinking.....
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/03/magazine/big-pants-style.html I'm 46, 5'4 and size 2 - I'm in very good shape and clothes usually look great on me. I definitely do not desperately cling to trends, but I do pride myself on being flexible to adapt my wardrobe as overall styles change. Around 6 years ago, I started gently shifting away from skinny jeans. First, buying jeans with a little more room around the calves and ankles (back then, we were calling them "straight leg", but they were still just glorified skinny jeans). And then 3 years ago, I bought a couple pairs of true "straight leg" jeans - classic 90s style. My favorite brands that work for me are Abercrombie, Paige and Joes. So the thing about the true "straight legs" that I bought a few years ago.... is that they just don't look great on me. The first time I put them on, DH was like "well those are incredibly unflattering". And they absolutely are. Like the article quotes someone, the problem with pants is that when you shift to a new style, you always think you look terrible in them because you've just gotten used to the old style. And by the time you get used to the new style, things move on. But I've had the straight leg jeans for 3 years, and they just don't look that good. Not terrible. But not flattering either. Just... the equivalent of wearing sweat pants to the grocery store. Like I didn't put any effort into them. The only times I feel pretty good in them is when I wear a body suit - which I guess is what alot of women were wearing in the 90s with them. I compare them to other styles: I have an amazing pair of bootcuts that I wear with heels, sailor style, and my old skinnies, and the straight legs are just so meh. So now the trend is shifting past straight leg to just colossal wide legs, a la JNCO. Fine, I get that kids be kids. But my 46 year old self isn't buying 36 inch waist jeans and cinching them. Even just regular super wide leg pants that bunch up at the ankles.... look absurd on women past like age 30. I'm not crazy about this right? So with all that said, I'd be really interested to see pictures of what people think are "staying up to date" shapes and styles of jeans and other pants for women in their 40s. Is there any chance to look flattering in these styles? Or are we in an era where the young person styles are just not going to look okay on moms? I know some people are going to post "once you hit 40, you should just wear what is classic and flatters you". But I'm not there yet, and I enjoy at least attempting to move along with styles. I'm fit and look great in a lot of other clothes, so not ready to embrace pants that purposefully make me look sloppy. Also, I'm looking for styles that are every day to be worn with sneakers, for things like coffee with friends. DCUM fashion people: Please post pics of jeans and pants that have contemporary shapes that are appropriate for a 46 year old! |

I can't post pics on my phone but the Madewell perfect vintage straight is pretty flattering.
I also think boyfriend style jeans look good on older women. Not super baggy but a slightly more relaxed fit. I am personally over skinnies and was happy for that trend to end. They just feel very constricting. The perfect vintage pair I have still hug my butt and are not too wide. But they aren't painted in skinnies. |
| I’m still wearing my skinny’s. I’m 38. I really don’t care if they’re “out.” They look the best on my petite frame |
| I don’t care what the latest trend is, I will still wear skinny and bootcut jeans only. Everything else is not flattering on me. |

I have a couple of Khaite's wider leg jeans. I hemmed them (since I'm short), but the designs are very fitted at the waist. They feel like dress pants made of denim. I think tailoring is a must if you want to follow this trend but still look polished. I would not get a pair with side pockets.

| I’ve been wearing slim straight…not quite skinny but not fully straight either. I don’t know what it is, but I cannot wear the straight leg jeans that seem to be in right now without looking like I’m about to go work at the construction site. It’s not attractive. |
| I’m 42 and he new jeans looks ridiculous on me. I’m sticking to my skinny jeans. |

I went through a phase last year where I spent a lot of time and money buying jeans and now, mercifully, I have no more foks to give and enough jeans in my closet to usually have a clean pair that fit. Some of them are wide and some are less wide.
I’ll tune back in ten years. Honestly for me it helped to watch a bunch of Instagram fashion influencer videos because eventually my eyes started to bleed and I remembered that it’s all pretty stupid. |

I changed jobs this year and everyone wears jeans everyday. I had none. I have been exculsively buying from Democracy Jeans and Kut from the Kloth.
If Skinny jeans work for you, just wear them. You could also look for a pair of boyfriend jeans or girlfriend jeans that are a little looser. I wear bootcut and ankle jeans. You might also want to look at Judy Blue jeans. Lots of options and different styles. |
| Guys the op said they were interested in current trends. All the posts about “I still wear skinnies and I don’t care that I am ten years behind trends” are not helpful |
| The wide leg jeans do not look good on most women. If you have any curves why would you hide them? |

I think Cindy Swanson looks up to date for this age range:

I think she’s just a thin, good looking woman wearing basic clothes tucked in with full hair and makeup and accessories. The lesson of her page is to get in shape, do your hair and makeup, wear jewelry and tuck things in. Voila. The clothes themselves are pretty boring. All of our clothes would look good/more than good enough if we were really fit and put together. |
| A classic trouser always works. |
I disagree with this. I am a tall, curvy woman and wide leg jeans/pants have always looked good on me. |
