Leaving the house is so expensive

Hard to make a trip to the store these days or do any activity without spending 100 bucks. Few of these occurrences a week and now you're blowing 1-2k/month without even thinking.

We went to a Smithsonian museum. It was free. We will splurge on takeout (not delivery, it costs too much) tonight, maybe $60 all in. Tomorrow we are going hiking and we'll get stuff to make a big pot of vegetarian soup.

You are not under some obligation to spend $250-500 a week on "activities" for your family. What are you even doing? Trampoline gyms and mini golf all the time? Why?

So don’t leave the house.

Get bikes. Ride around the neighborhood. Free.

I agree with you OP. There are days when I specifically will not leave the house.

$100x4 is $400. Not 1-2k per month as OP says they wind up spending "without thinking."

You can make different choices.

If you can spend 1-2k per month “without even thinking” then clearly you’re not counting pennies.

taking the kids out hiking is free, and a great way toavoid paying for, say, Vitamin D supplements

OP didn’t say weekend only so that’s why their math isn’t the same as yours.

You are right. Find ways to be frugally creative. Friday at a nice park (in some fancy neighborhood), Saturday at Postal museum, Sunday at the zoo, next week badminton in local park, stroll and coffee at Eastern Market, dinner from falafel place etc etc.
