My trusty Dyson v8 needs a new battery. It’s six years old or so.
I tried an off brand battery on our basement dyson and while it works, the suction isn’t as strong and I worry about fire risk. So I don’t want to go that route. Is it worth upgrading to a v15? The laser and the led screen seem dumb to me, but they claim it’s more powerful. Has anyone used both and can comment? I’m sort of feeling like the v8 is great and then they just started adding doodads, but I don’t want to live with vacuum fomo. |
| I can't help with FOMO, but we replaced a v8 with another v8. Did not even look at or think about newer models. |
| I replaced my V6 battery and am enjoying 3+ more years on it and we use it constantly. |

I've had the V8, V11, and now the Gen5. The V11 was definitely an improvement in suction and battery life over the V8 so I imagine the V15 would be just as nice. I bypassed the V15 and went with the newest Gen5 since it just has a button to turn on/off and you don't need to hold the trigger.
The laser beam on the hardwood floor attachment is pretty cool - it's horrifying to see the dust and dog hair on what appears to be a clean floor. I wouldn't say it's a "must have" feature though. The suction is def. stronger than the V11 and V8. I think if you were to upgrade, you're fine going with the V11 or V15. |
| I have the V10 motohead and it is very good in battery life/ etc. |
Thank you for this. Please tell me, did you think the laser beam was going to be fun? Or were you like, oh whatever laser beam and then it turned out to be fun? Because I’m on board with the latter but if it’s the former I assume you’re Dr Evil and I don’t want to take vacuum advice from such a man. |
I just thought it was a marketing gimmick to be honest but both DH and I were utterly shocked at the fine layer of dust and dog hair across our hardwood floors. Keep in mind, we vacuum multiple times a week with our previous Dyson, Miele and/or Roomba. The amount of stuff the laser illuminated was crazy. If I'm in a rush I just use the regular carpet brush on the wood floors because otherwise that dang light makes me feel like I need to grab every speck. As I said though, I wouldn't have bought it solely for the laser. I honestly went with the Gen5 because I didn't want to have to keep holding the trigger down. |

I recently ordered a V15 and returned it for the V12. The V15 is HEAVY. The V12 is so light it feels like a toy, but it works very well. The V12 also has a a smaller canister and a slightly less powerful motor, but in practice I found those things didn't affect my actual usage, but the weight was a huge factor. The V12 also has the laser and the on/off button instead of a trigger that the V15 has.
I don't have pets, so it's possible that would change my opinion of the suction, but performance on hardwood/tile (with the fluffy head) is great, and with the carpet head on the V12 does an amazing job on our carpets, too. And it's light enough that my 9yo can use it (she thinks it's fun - I'm not gonna tell her ).
(Agree with the PP that I thought the laser was a silly marketing gimmick until I used it; it actually helps me make sure I got everything. The display that shows you how much you sucked up and what sizes the particles are, though, is totally a gimmick and has no practical value beyond grossing you out.) |
