I am hearing math is one of the challenging courses at TJ.
Isn't math optional after Algebra 2 at TJ, like rest of FCPS? I understand a math or an engineering major type students may be interested in taking precalculus and beyond. If student is more interested in lab based sciences, rocketry, drone, video game design, and that type of practical applications, will they be required to take math beyond Algebra 2? |
They need to make it through at least AP calc.

You need a high level of math to be successful at TJ. |
Most advanced science is going to require higher level math. I cannot imagine a class on rocketry that doesn’t utilize calculus.
Why would you apply to attend a STEM school and then stop taking math after Algebra 2? I stopped math after Algebra 2 but I struggled with math and took the slowest possible class. I cannot imagine a child attending TJ and not taking higher level math. |
In the presentation, nothing was said about needing to take higher level math, which to me meant algebra 2 following FCPS graduation requirement. Are there multiple tracks at TJ? one with high level math for those interested in math, and others following FCPS reqs? |
From the link above:
NOTE: Although most TJ graduation requirements will be met within the natural progression of courses (e.g. English 9, 10, 11, 12), the following graduation requirements must be intentionally scheduled somewhere within each student’s four years at TJ: 3 World Language credits (must be sequential in same language) 1 additional credit of non-AP social studies course 1 credit of Economics & Personal Finance (or AP Macro/Micro Economics) 1 credit of Computer Science completed before Junior year 1 credit of AP Calculus AB or BC 1 credit of a Fine Art/Career & Tech Ed |
Not sure. There are probably electives just like any HS |
Nope. You must take Calc at TJ. |
Wish they had said something about this before applying, instead of wasting darn time. Cant get 3/4th of the kids in our school to learn basic algebra, but want them to go to TJ and do more math |
I am going to assume you are a Troll but kids who are taking Algebra 1 H in 8th grade should be able to handle Calc AB as a senior. Anyone applying to a STEM magnet school should know that the M is for Math and the E is for engineering, both of which require an interest in, well, math. Not to mention most advanced sciences require higher math. |
Troll!! |
has this always been the case or changed recently? |
I see six math courses from Math 1 to 6. If doing algebra 1 in 8th, with what Math do they start at TJ? |
TJ math courses are semesters. They will start in Math 1, and also need to take research statistics at the same time. https://tjhsst.fcps.edu/node/3332 |
Always. Had a sibling at TJ who decided he hated math part way through, but even still he was totally fine taking Calc AB. If you can survive Algebra II/Trig at TJ you can survive the rest of the easy track. |
