Our close friends' son was sexually assaulted by an Uber driver in the District this week.
I wanted to let people know that this is happening in our area and that you might not want to let your kids take Uber alone. When I googled about this apparently sexual assault by Uber drivers, even towards teens, is not uncommon. We were about to start letting our teen travel on Uber Teen. Not now. I just wanted to let people know so that you are aware of the risks before you make a decision about letting your children ride on Uber Teen. I will not be checking back on this thread as this is simply too painful to think about or talk about. |
Who puts a teen in a car alone with a stranger? |
FYI you can request a driver that's female. |
I’m so sorry this happened. I’m not surprised and as soon as the Uber Teen feature was rolled out, I knew that it was going to be a bad idea. Even if it happens to just one person it’s once too many.
I hope your friend’s son is ok. |
A lot of people. |
I don’t know. If I had a boy I might have been more likely allow it- just based in statistics. Not after hearing this though.
I read somewhere that Lyft was going to roll out a program where women and teens could request female drivers. This makes sense and reduces the risk substantially. |
Millions of people, all the time. What are you going to do? Chaperone your child to college? |
Jesus so judgmental. Teens ride in Ubers all the time. For sports and social stuff. |
That’s a lot of stupid people. |
Then you put them in danger. |
Judgmental for keeping a child safe. Okay, you. |
A 16 yo isn’t any more vulnerable than an 18 yo. |
Uh, this is about Uber teen. That doesn’t fall under college aged individuals. Try again. |
Who thinks a 16 year old is the same as an 18 year old? |
No one is safe getting in a car with a stranger but there is a difference between 18 and 16. I mean, 16 years old are allowed in the military are they? |
