Protein shakes beginner

Anonymous
I need more protein after my workouts so am considering protein shakes but don’t know anything about them. I am 50 (f) and on WW. What kinds do you like and why? Are any of them ‘natural’ or is it all processed?

It’s all processed. But I think you mean ultra processed. Ground beef is processed by just grounding it.. but anyway.

There is whey protein and pea protein. Whey is dairy based so some people have issues with dairy. Pea protein is plant based.

I have been drinking protein drinks for like 20 years. Here are the three things I look for:

1. High protein, low carb (want my carb from food not a drink full of sugar.)

2. Cost. Some are outrageously overpriced.

3. Taste. Could be cheap and 30 g of protein but if it tastes like crap, not going to drink it.

With that said, I love premier protein’s caramel because I mix it with cold brew after a workout and it’s like a protein-packed version of a Starbuck’s drink.

The plant based powders are ok. They have a slightly different aftertaste than the whey. I was dairy-free for years but have re-introduced some dairy into my diet.

It is really just a try-and-see game. I think it helps to buy smaller quantities at like Target than fully commit to a larger amount from GNC or Costco.

Ww people love premier protein drinks as I believe they are low in points.

+1 but I go with the vanilla

I use plain whey isolate protein powder, blended with lactose free yogurt or kefir (and a bunch of other things). I’m lactose intolerant but can handle the whey fine. The plain has a very short ingredients list; th flavored has a much longer list and something in it gives me gas. YMMV

When looking for a protein powder look for one with 20g of protein and under 140 calories.

I like the premier protein cafe latte added to my coffee. Buy as the first PP mentioned, look for low sugar high protein. I also like the atkins shakes.

Fairlife are the best I’ve had by a mile. Even the 42g protein ones are very good.

Why do you need more protein after your workout?

This is my question, whether you actually NEED it.

That said, I think fairlife is a good choice and its easy to find in the smaller serving bottles.

People on WW are obsessed with Premier Protein because of the low points. I hate that stuff, it tastes like everything fake that you don’t want all in one bottle. I prefer getting some Vega One powder at Whole Foods and making a smoothie with some almond milk and like half of a frozen banana or maybe some frozen cherries.

I love Kachava. Chocolate. I only use one scoop after my workout. Keeps me satisfied for awhile. Vegan too. Mix with oat milk and frozen banana

I don't use them after a workout, but for breakfast and sometimes dinner. Good way to get the necessary amount of protein in.

I am 50, menopausal, trying desperately to lift heavier weights but I can’t seem to build any muscle despite doing all the right things at the gym.
