| Do you think they try to cap a total mcps number or balance by individual school? |
| yes, they even said this indirectly: "UMD is not University of Montgomery County" |
| I have to imagine they are also seeing firsthand the impact of grade inflation in MCPS. Lots of kids with gaudy GPAs in recent years who cannot draft a grammatically-correct sentence, for example. |
Is that the case? I don't get the opportunity to review writing samples from MCPS HS students nor do I know their GPAs. |
|
It didn’t work against DS and DD this year, but we were prepared for all sorts of outcomes. DD would have willingly done FC. DS would have done a semester at MC and transferred. Still surprised that they were accepted for Fall 2024, but peers with similar stats were rejected completely.
We may never know what UMD really thinks about MCPS. However, other schools could decide to love bomb MCPS if they really want our kids. Or families could demand an end to grade inflation and a return of HS exams. |
| OP here again. What I am wondering specifically is if you think they lump all MCPS together or if they consider a per school "quota"? |
What is FC? |
"Freshman Connection" - ie, you are accepted by restricted to evening and Friday classes (ie, the least popular times). |
| From the limited information that I have based on DC and their friends’ experiences, I suspect that they are yield protecting to some extent. Because it seems that the kids who applied to a large number of schools (which is information that is available to schools on the Common App) had worse outcomes than those who only applied to a handful of schools. By worse outcomes I mean either being rejected with stats that put them above many classmates who were admitted, or being denied seats for certain majors when a classmate with lower stats got in. |
I think they compare to your peer group within the school. |
False. Colleges have no idea how many other schools you applied to. |
| There are plenty of private school kids applying to UMD a well. My guess is that they want to have a mix of kids from all the high schools so likely have an overall cap for all kids coming from MoCo (I doubt this is a hard and fast number) as well as a target percentage for each high school based on historical data. |
Omg no. They have x number of slots for instate students with approximately how many thousands of applications. Let's say 25,000 just for giggles. With max 12 people in admissions. DCUM participants can not do math. UMD is a data school. First pass done by students not college admissions counselors did your kid complete the application oh wait that is acutaully done by a computer program now. LOL, first pass completed then do grades and schools meat mins yep. Then what decides who gets in well if you think those counselors are reading all of those apps you are literally stupid. OOS students are considered completely differently. Money talks. Full pay helps tremendously and stats who cares... Nephew 2.5 GPA from WI got in last year. Mom and dad made a lovely donation. |
| Nobody is saying they are reading all the apps. As you say, they are a "data" school. They make this clear in the visit. They can literally download applicant data and sort by county vs. school. The question is which are they sorting by to make their decisions on a balanced class. You don't need to call people stupid (especially with your limited knowledge of data analysis). You also sound like sour grapes. |
“Grammatically-correct” is incorrect grammar… |
