Because it seems that the kids who applied to a large number of schools (which is information that is available to schools on the Common App) had worse outcomes than those who only applied to a handful of schools. By worse outcomes I mean either being rejected with stats that put them above many classmates who were admitted, or being denied seats for certain majors when a classmate with lower stats got in.

This is completely false.

It's a state institution they have to ensure students from the entire state are accepted. Students are competing against other students within their high school for a slot.

You can see how many students from each county were enrolled by county Here: https://www.usmd.edu/IRIS/?view=UMCP

This does seem to be a limited data source. Students are not based entirely on their test scores. We learned that some students who were not accepted - even with high GPAs, good test scores were not strong enough compared to their peers in similar programs (Early College, HS magnet programs etc)

UMD wants/needs to have representation from all counties in MD. That means it's harder for a student to be admitted from MC, slightly less hard from Howard county and easier from Garrett.

This has nothing to do with UMD view on MCPS, more to do with family incomes and # of students applying.

UMD has always had a very hard to predict admissions system.

They take about 50% of the applicants from each MCPS school.
