VYS Soccer - better or worse?

VYS boy's NPL teams yesterday against Annandale United:
2-6-1

Didn't realize Annandale was that good. Did they make a change?

Safe to say that the girl's side is head and shoulders above the boys.

I wonder if the curriculum is the same? My guess is no.

Quick poll -- who's in favor of asking the admin to ban the dude who's obsessed with VYS results?

(BTW -- as far as I know, the curriculum's the same. The boys just have more competition for their players. If you're halfway decent, you've probably fled to Bethesda South by now.)

If a kid hates soccer because the team sucks, then soccer isn't the sport for that kid, and it isn't the responsibility of any club to make sure all the kids teams win all the time so they will stay interested in the sport. They are there for the sport or they are not. It is black & white.

Indeed, I think VYS and a lot of area clubs would be better off if they had more players who loved the sport for the sport itself. Not just an exercise in vanity.

Maybe the kid doesn't hate the sport but they do hate playing with their team.

There are many factors, but I do think the girls' program hugely benefits from Hank's involvement. On this board, some people have criticized his approach to talent identification. I will say that he brings a maniacal attention to detail and decades of experience to the way he designs and manages training sessions. I was amazed at his inventiveness and the obsessive commitment to helping players improve.

Exactly. Sports teach a lot of life lessons about winning and losing and kids should play because they love the sport BUT, if teammates are not committed. If the coach isn't committed. etc. Then the kid should leave and find a team where he/she fits in. Also, you don't want you kid to be one of the weakest players on the team nor one of the strongest. Players need the right environment to develop. The right answer is NOT...we play for Vienna no matter what. If you don't want to play on a sh-t team then you must not love the sport.

The quote at the top is probably just made up -- the troll was pretending to be someone he's not.

Anyway, though, you give great advice here. I just wonder: when is it time to stop switching teams and hoping to find just the right environment, do you think? Is there a point where you just say, yes, the coach is a buffoon, but DD at least has some friends on the team, so we're going to stick it out? I kind of wonder if there even is "the right environment" considering how issue-plagued travel clubs seem to be these days. Your thoughts?

In reading through this forum there seems to be a cultural divide at Vienna. It seems most parents seem more than content to just have a nice environment for their kids to play soccer. A commitment level with these parents seems to be lacking and can run at odds with parents who are looking for a more competitive environment for their kids. They either see their kids as being bored or being held back by what is essentially an expensive town club.

Yes, there's a feeling, or maybe it's a reality, that elite boys players start to hit a dead end at U12 or U13, so they leave for BRYC, McLean, DC United, etc. Then some of them come back to Vienna, but not to VYS, to play for Madison or Oakton HS. Elite girls have more options within VYS.

On the boys side at least, the general consensus about VYS is that it's a nice, laid back, not super competitive club. Which is fine—except that a club like that should not be charging as much as the competitive clubs. VYS should charge in line with the reality of what it is.

And they should pull the boys teams from the NPL, if possible.
