Is sitting around doing nothing really that bad?

I’m sick of doing stuff all the time. I actually really enjoy just sitting on my couch. When my kids are no longer living at home, I want to eat cereal for dinner every night. That is all.

It’s bad it you do it 24x7 your body will atrophy.

Also never sitting on your couch enjoying cereal is bad. People have to be chronically doing some thing or traveling. Also have issues. I think it’s an anxiety response to not be able to sit quietly and enjoy your own company.

And your mind. Both need physical and mental activities.

My teen and I enjoy cereal for dinner every few weeks. Nothing wrong with that !

You will eventually get sick of an existence like that but I think it’s good for everyone to experience it for a while!

I’m sure you know how important rest is, right? Constant business leads to some bad physical and emotional health issues for most people. I’m not religious but some of humanity’s foundations myths like biblical creation story emphasize the importance of rest (really a balance between rest and work). You shouldn’t wait until the kids are out of tbe house. Drop something and rest.

You go girl. Live life on your terms. Nobody needs to be a hamster on the wheel all day. That's what's pushing everyone to therapy. Humans aren't made for this 24/7 lifestyle.

Sit on couch all you want but walk 5 minutes for every hr you sit AND obviously 30 min cardio per day. Also cereal should be whole grain, with some seeds, nuts and fruits on it.

Please. If I’m eating cereal for dinner it’s going to be the sugary kind.

Our brains need way more rest time than we normally allow them. Sit on the couch and do nothing for as long as you need to; you’ll be motivated to get up and do something you actually want to do when you’re ready.

To be clear, this is sitting on the couch without a phone or tv, just relaxing and staring out the window. I’m actually embarrassed to say I don’t want to do that; the idea makes me anxious because I feel like I have too much to do that I should be doing instead. And yet I let myself find 5 minute break to check DCUM and play candy crush. My brain is clearly messed up.

I have significant anxiety issues, but greatly enjoy being alone and chilling.

I think you need a balance. But I also think that in this area (DMV), a lot of people are overly focused on always doing things and having plans, and I think it is either a symptom or the cause of a lot of the anxiety and unhappiness around here.

That's why during Covid so many people actually embraced just staying home, spending time as a family, and relaxing. Doing stuff like baking bread, knitting, playing board games, puzzles, etc. Those are all normal ways to occupy your time and not that long ago, that's what most people would do (even wealthy people) most evenings, to relax and unwind.

I hate the go, go, go of parenting life in the DMV especially, and we opt out as much as we can without harming our kid's social lives. But we genuinely just like lying around the house in the evening, making dinner (or heating up leftovers), playing a game, and reading books. We have friends who are dining out, going to shows, hosting or going to other people's homes, etc., 4-5 nights a week. That sounds hellish to me. I want to heat up some soup, play cards, watch a little TV, and then read a chapter from a novel and go to sleep at 9:30. Heaven.

LOL. Cinnamon toast crunch is a gift from heaven. I can't eat it anymore and I wish I had eaten more back when I could!

I also love Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Why can’t you eat it anymore?

I developed a major gluten intolerance. TBH I miss cinnamon toast crunch (and rice crispies) more than pasta or bread.
