Has anyone looked at the FY25 Metro budget? It sounds very drastic! 67 out of 135 bus lines may be totally eliminated. 10 metro stations closed and more.
What to make of this proposal? Is there a way to avoid such draconian measures? https://www.wmata.com/initiatives/budget/upload/GM-Proposed-FY25-Budget-3.pdf |
Metro loses over $40 million annually because the DC Council decriminalized fare jumping (formerly considered theft of services) in the name of equity. Those scofflaws are costing the public bus routes. |
Yes. Funding Metro. https://ggwash.org/view/92207/death-spiral-or-new-dawn-how-did-wmata-get-here |
| We’ve seen this song and dance time and again. If WMATA was actually worried about their budget, they would not be spending like drunken sailers on extraneous things big and small, like building 3 new HQ buildings, holiday wrapping trains, and “Your Metro report”. |
| Yes I am sure “your metro report” cost enough to fund a bus route for a year |
| Who could have foreseen that going to a payment optional system would lead to this? |
Or we could decide that public transportation is a public good that should be funded by taxpayers in general, not just users. Like we treat streets -- we all pay for them, not just drivers. |
| Oh well. Service got worse and riders abandoned it. Service will get even worse and more riders will abandon it. |

DCites are whining that VA and MD should increase their taxes to fund the disaster known as WMATA.
Hell no. Why should MD and VA residents pay more because the idiots on the DC council legalized fare theft that’s costing the system millions of dollars? VA and MD residents shouldn’t be paying more because DC’s progressive politics are a dumpster fire. The workers also don’t do anything except collect checks. They’re do nothing lazy bums who allow theft and act all ornery or pissed off whenever you have to approach them due to a fare issue. Heaven forbid they are interrupted for 20 seconds from their phone screen time and have to press a few buttons to fix your fare issue. And they’re supposed to get pensions? Lay them all off and automate everything. |
|
Three things that are not creating the Metro budget hole:
1. fare jumping 2. wrapping holiday buses or trains 3. producing reports required by law |
Because we all benefit from Metro. Yes, even you. |
Nope. I don’t use the system at all because it is ridiculously expensive. It is cheaper to Uber than take the metro. |
Metro is for commuters in VA and MD. There are fewer commuters now. If most trips are DC residents taking trips within DC, then why should MD and VA increase funding? |
My old commuter bus line went from a straight trip downtown with limited stops to a bus to a metro station that requires me to change trains again to get where the original bus dropped me. I just pay for parking now. |
But all those people who still do take Metro? Your Uber isn’t sitting in traffic with their cars. So you do benefit. |
