HB allocation question

Anonymous
I am trying to figure out how the allocation works for HB. Last year there were three students that left HB to go to Yorktown and Washington and liberty high schools at the end of eighth grade. How do these three candidates get added into the allocations? It seems that the numbers for the schools did not change based on these kids leaving. What happens to their spots?

In the past they opened up the spots to high school kids on the waitlist.

yes this is what they do - offer to kids on waitlist. this is why there is a waitlist.

What about admin transfers?

I doubt they offer admin transfers to option programs with capped enrollment. Admin transfers are for schools not “school programs.”

Back in the day, when H-B Woodlawn was more of a program for students who didn’t quite fit socially into the typical large high school culture, APS allowed for transfers.

^^ It really should return to that model.

They 100% still do this. It’s deeply wrong in my opinion. But APS still back doors kids into HB.

OP Here: What I mean is that if kids state at the end of the year they will not be returning why aren’t there more spots allocated for the lottery for the incoming year. I know of a few kids that stated they would not returning for ninth grade. Yet, HB still only took 25 new students this year.

Because other kids transfer there DURING the year.

There are multiple cases of kids who have other (non-twin) siblings attending right now, even after the implementation of the lottery system. Given the limited supply of seats, there seems to be some RNG magic on that corner of Wilson.

and there are lots and lots of cases of families where the sibling did not get in.

Sure those families don’t know the right people. The odds for siblings getting in is incredibly small.

The odds of a specific set of siblings getting in are small. The odds of any set of siblings getting is higher.

You would also expect that kids with siblings already at HB Woodlawn to be over represented in the lottery.

Depends on the feeder school. Last year ATS had 72 applicants for 3 slots, so yes, very small chance of siblings getting in with no backdoor maneuvering. If you're coming from Barrett with 8 applicants for 3 slots it's still unlikely but not completely crazy for siblings to both win the lottery in their year.
