Both my kids (so...siblings) got in but neither got in from the 6th grade lottery. One got off wait list, one got in at 9th grade lottery when they expand the number of seats. Agree that once you send one kid there you are probably more likely to put subsequent kids in the lottery and keep trying.

2 kids there too. One got in mid year off the wait list. The other (younger) got in right away through the lottery.

Yes, we were very motivated to put the younger one in the lottery after having the older sibling there. It's definitely easier having both kids at the same school. If older one had not gotten in, would we still have put the younger one in the lottery? Who knows.

I think most people with a kid there put their younger one in the lottery. Sometimes they get in, sometimes they don't.

Could those kids have been designated to the spots because they are part of a program that is only held at that school?

I know of a few kids that stated they would not returning for ninth grade. Yet, HB still only took 25 new students this year.

They don’t add those seats to the slots for incoming 9th graders. They take kids that apply to transfer in into 10th grade. Kids apply to enter at every grade level every year. My DD (an HB grad) knew kids that transferred in half way through 11th grade.

Many of the siblings my DD knew at HB transferred in mid year or in an off year (not 6th or 9th grade). Lots of people don’t seem to understand you can apply every year. Also siblings are more likely to take a mid year offer. We know kids who turned down HB because they didn’t want to switch schools mid year.

I doubt they offer admin transfers to option programs with capped enrollment. Admin transfers are for schools not “school programs.”

Back in the day, when H-B Woodlawn was more of a program for students who didn’t quite fit socially into the typical large high school culture, APS allowed for transfers.

Yep. Add up the any each school is allocated. You will see it does not equal the entry class. They have some cushion to add kids, probably school board members given that every single board member with a child has a kid at HBW.

They 100% still do this. It’s deeply wrong in my opinion. But APS still back doors kids into HB.

But if they are saying they are not returning at the end of eighth grade then those spot would go to ninth graders. Since the school allocates a certain number by school, how would this work? There is not just one waitlist for ninth grade.

How do you know they backdoor kids into HB?
.

1) because I know of some personally
2) because aps admits to doing this

I can also confirm that kids get admin transfers to HB. I know of 2 in the past 3 years. And my kids don’t go there, and aren’t interested. It’s well known that they will sometimes make room for kids that have trouble elsewhere.

But why wouldn’t these kids just before transferred to a different neighborhood school?

*This is exactly what we are complaining about.*
