What do you think of adults who never learned to drive?

...and are now in their 40s.

Not because of any trauma or anything, just didn't get around to it.

Have to rely on everyone else to get rides or Uber everywhere.

I think they grew up in a city. Then I think nothing more of it.

If they have lived in a big urban center or city all their lives (like NYC) then I think nothing of it.

If they live in a place like Northern VA or the burbs, I think they must be incredibly emotionally stunted. Driving isn't just about getting from Point A to Point B - it's about independence and freedom. I get that learning to drive is nerve racking for a lot of people, but emotionally stable people have a stronger sense of independence to want to overcome that nervousness.

What if they grew up in a rural area?

I have a relative like this, and we recently went on vacation. I ended up being annoyed by it because driving in an unfamiliar (foreign) locale is stressful, meanwhile she was the passenger princess playing on her phone while I was navigating intense traffic etc. I love her but she is a passive person (life happens "to" her) and it's kind of entitled to let everyone around her bear the brunt of driving.

She says she's getting her drivers license this year. We'll see.

No one cares

My sister-in-law is like this. She’s never lived in a place with public transportation, either.

Apparently, when she was a teenager, her stepfather was a total chauvinist pig (among other things, at one point I know she was in foster care ) who didn’t think women should drive, and I think as an adult she just enjoys forcing my brother to be at her beck and call to drive her around. I think she did actually learn to drive and get a license at one point, but never got comfortable with it.

I have the friend that never learned to drive for no reason, and lives in the burbs. She also expects everyone else to pick her up and drop her off for all events, and acts offended if you say "I don't have time for that."

Pathetic

I knew more than one person like this growing up in the NYC suburbs. Families would move out of the city and the wives would not learn how to drive. Ever.

No one cares until it becomes their problem.

I know several people like this. They all either grew up in cities and/or didn’t have access to a car/lessons as teens (newsflash: it’s very expensive, time consuming, and difficult to learn to drive as an adult actually) and/or have severe anxiety/PTSD about driving. None of them are entitled; they just manage with Uber/public transit or decline invites to things that are inaccessible to them. The older we get the more of them are married/partnered with people who are fine with driving and the less of an issue it becomes.

I would be very surprised and assume they have anxiety or some traumatic experience that keeps them from driving. It is highly unusual for a rural kid to never learn to drive.

I think they have their reasons. Driving a car is a huge responsibility and requires a lot of multi tasking. Many places in the US give out drivers licenses without much thought or training.

Even if they grew up in a city I think they have some IQ issues.

Btw I know people who are bad drivers who are “\smart” but I assume they lack some sort of intelligence to drive well
