| Not sure if this has been covered, but because of the snow days, will they take a day off of spring break or what will happen? |
| They have a bunch of potential makeup days on the calendar, and they will anounce later which one they choose. But we will almost certainly have more days to make up before winter is over. |
|
January 29th would be the best option, but MCPS probably can't get their act together to do it.
April 10th is the next best option, partly so they can reserve April 22nd for an almost-certainty-needed second make-up day. |
|
"If the school year is disrupted by emergencies and schools are closed three or more days, dates identified as possible
make-up instructional days include: November 1, 2023; January 29, March 25-26, April 10, April 22, June 14 and June 17–18, 2024." Besides 11/1, who knows which they'll use. |
Choosing 4/10 before choosing 4/22 would be a rather large show of religious favoritism. There are unlikely to be snow days after 3/15, so there would be no need to choose an April makeup day at this time. Using 1/29 would be prudent. |
I definitely think that should make 1/29 a full school day, but unless they announce that tomorrow, I don't think it's happening. It takes so long for MCPS to make decisions that it would be best to plan on having both 4/10 and 4/22 as make-up days. |
Right now, it’s only 1 day. If they choose 4/10 and not 4/22, they are bigots |
| It involves the unions which is why it takes forever to make these decisions. I agree 1/29 is the best option but certain the union will block it. Teachers have a right to plan their ski trips! |
Why do you feel the need to post false information? I’m sorry that your life is so miserable. Teachers had nothing to do with closing schools last week. Do you think the incessant teacher bashing is helpful for your kids. You should move to private or homeschool if you hate public school teachers so much but I’m guessing you can’t afford it. |
Are you saying unions don’t have to approve the make-up day? I wasn’t talking about closing school, I was talking about the makeup day. In any case, I was not bashing teachers, only the union. |
To my knowledge, the union isn’t involved |
| Does anyone know how soon they will make the decision? |
In 2022, they announced the makeup day plan in late February. |
| Unions aren’t involved. However there is a state law that says schools can close for operational reasons (not just directly religious). That has been used to close school days on the calendar because a lot of staff and students would be off that day to attend spiritual or family gatherings. |
Technically, no. In fact, it is illegal for MCPS to negotiate with the union on the calendar. Practically, yes, though. Because they'd claim they were negotiating the make-up day itself, but rather the loss of a professional day. |
