What happens to January Open of snow?

Anonymous
With some sites being out there what happens if we get snow?

I could see Colgan being impossible to get to whereas Audrey More would be business as usual.

How does that work?

I couldn't find an example of this having happened, so no idea if they'd cancel all three out of fairness or just the closed site.

What they would not do is try to combine last minute.

Last summer, they combined one weekend of the LC open meet at the last minute.

The LC open meets are routinely undersubscribed. The SC open meets decidedly are NOT.

I would hope that they cancel all sites out of fairness. But it still will mess up a lot of swimmers.

I don’t think there is any chance they would cancel all 3 sites out of “fairness”. If the weather is bad in Loudoun and PWC but fine in Laurel they probably will go on as scheduled with the Fairland site. It’s also supposed to snow only a few inches Friday morning, it should be fine by Saturday morning.

I think you are mistaken in thinking that pwcs is likely to have worse weather. It’s south of here and on a major road. A few years ago I scratched my kids from the January open bc of weather and I didn’t want to drive to pwcs. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one but the meet still happened.

I don't think that would be fair at all and it doesn't make sense. If some can still swim, they should.

+1

The ones that stay open will swim

It is probably not a best practice to be holding meets out in Loudoun in January and February since they get snow out there when no one else does.

I take your point, but they need both venues and teams willing to host. It's probably out of necessity rather than preference. I also agree with PP that venues that are viable based on roads and weather should go forward.

Worst case I think they could cancel the morning session on Saturday but the meet is already oversubscribed at least at the Prince William location that pushing back the start time means the 13&O would be there way way too late.

None of the Jan open sites are in loudoun. It’s pwcs in prince william (to the south), Audrey Moore in fairfax and fairland in pg.

How do we know it is already oversubscribed?

https://www.pvswim.org/ has the Psych Sheets and Estimated Timelines for each site. There are a lot of kids signed up for a lot of events.

I’ve seen it happen. Wasn’t it just last year that the pool in MD closed because the bulk head collapsed and they moved everyone to Franconia?
