And it’s not the first time this has happened.
DH is a Professor and has had nonstop issues with athletes in some of his courses. He had a student turn in a plagiarized final paper. It was very clearly AI created and still don’t incredibly poorly do the kid a 0. Athletics says all kids must make 70 average to stay on team and between the 0 and the kid just not showing up to class he’s failing pretty miserably. He kept arguing with DH about making up the grade and how he “has to pass” and will do anything to make it up. DH said nope, beyond a Time Machine nothing can be done. So student gets coach involved. DH tells coach same thing, didn’t show up to class and he turned in AI paper. He’s done grading and it is what it is. Coach pushed a bit than gives up. Student then emails DH ominous message “this would have been so much easier if you would have worked with me” DH forward it to Dean and reports plagiarism to board. Then today he receives message on university email from a throwaway email account listing our home address as well as the names of two of our kids. Finding home address is easy but not sure how he got our kids names. No social media and DH said he doesn’t discuss his family in class. Syntax and grammar makes DH believe 99% it’s the student. He’s reporting and I’m not sure what much more can be done. We have Ring camera and will be gone for a few weeks soon. But God, this is exhausting. He had a student a few years ago actively say he was going to kill him because he failed his class and couldn’t play football anymore. Charges were pressed but university drug their knuckles over the entire thing. And this happens to his female colleagues far more often. Disgruntled students driving past their house numerous times engine roaring. One had a direct threat of rape to her face. All male student athletes. The major issue is the coaches seem to push this narrative that these kids deserve a pass for bare minimum effort. The university isn’t regarded as the highest academically but is very sports oriented and DH is just miserable. It’s a joke. Grown adults threatening faculty and the university is so desperate to retain the money makers they do only that they’re legally required to do. Merry Christmas I guess. Glad DH is looking to get out of academia. |
| Wow. Sorry you are going through this OP. This is America, where sports reigns supreme and athletes get paid $700 million dollars. Insanity. |
|
OP, why has this not been brought before the University Court? Be aware that an accused athlete will bring any and all reinforcements (multiple character witnesses, including the coaches and liaisons, mainly) for their trial, but I have seen students literally get thrown out of school real time, on the spot, same day as trial, for this offense.
What is the university doing for you? |
| If I were you and/or your husband I'd file a restraining order against the student. |
| OP, how does the university handle crimes? I would go to the local police, if nothing else, so that the threats are on file. If that police department is above board, they will take the report. It seems you have adequate and tangible proof. |
Also cameras everywhere around your property. Everywhere. This kid sounds unhinged. |
Agree. |
PP again. Also, get a housesitter while you are gone. This is what we do, as we came across a somewhat similar situation. |
PP again - and tell ALL your close neighbors that you are away, so they can observe. |
The past student ended up bring legally threatened and just left. With this current student DH is sending everything to the Dean. We will probably file a report. |
We have s young girl staying with our pets. I’m very concerned about leaving her alone if he shows up. |
| Rather than leave academia, your DH should go to a school were athletics are deemphasized (e.g., Claremont Colleges). |
We’re going to go above university. They move slow and essentially will wait till a direct crime is committed. They are “solution oriented” which means lots of diplomatic BS that wastes time and puts the offending student and faculty face to face. When his female colleague was threatened with rape they still were PITA about it and wanted all this effort from the woman. She said nope, sent to cops and pressed charges and forced university to act. |
If only it were that easy. |
| Honestly, moving forward - DH should look for a new job where athletics aren’t as valued. In the meantime, I would not make these things major issues. If he wants to call a kid on plagiarism, he should put all student work through that program that does that. And if it’s an athlete who needs a C, so what. A C is not good. Give it, focus on the kids who are interested, and move along. The hassle you’re going through right now is not worth it. And clearly, these kids aren’t learning that plagiarism is wrong from these encounters. |
