My HS junior is intrigued by this school, as am I. I seem to remember that decades ago it had an open admissions policy and was known as the landing spot for in-state kids who either couldn't get in or didn't bother to apply anywhere else. So I was surprised to see that in the most recent USNWR list it ranked up there near Wisconsin, UIUC, and Georgia Tech, was tied with Purdue and actually ahead of schools like Purdue and UGA. Yet it still has over a 50% acceptance rate (with a six-year graduation rate of 87%).
I'm not sure if The Ohio State could be called a hidden gym since it's massive and everyone knows about it. But is it possibly being overlooked as a top-tier OOS public? |
| DS from NOVA applied last year for their engineering school (CS). Don't think he ever seriously considered BUT offered enough merit to make it competitive with UVA engineering in-state. Never visited. |
| It’s a great school check it out. |
| With the exception of UVA, it outranks all the other public schools in the VA-MD-Delaware-WV area and that includes Virginia Tech and UMD-CP. Good school. |
That is due to questionable USNWR ranking criteria. |
Yes, we've been through this before. Based on undergrad rankings, look like peers to me. OVERALL OSU-43 UMD-46 Tech-47 ENGINEERING Tech-13 UMD-19 OSU-25 BUSINESS OSU-17 UMD-21 Tech-47 CS UMD-18 Tech-27 OSU-33 ECON UMD-32 OSU-41 Tech-80 PSYCH UMD-27 OSU-39 Tech-51 |
| It’s the same meathead school it’s always been. |
| The acceptance rate is skewed bc low stats applicants who wouldn’t be admitted to the main campus do get accepted to branch campuses around the state. Some transfer to Columbus, some don’t. But 60% of applicants aren’t getting accepted to main campus. It has solid schools of architecture and public policy and some well regarded social science programs (political science, geography, international studies) and is much more of a city than Bloomington, West Lafayette, or some of the other Midwest college towns. |
| Columbus area has different politics than the rest of the state |
|
Great option for Ohioans.
That's it. |
| UMD incoming SATs are like double |
| I’m a UMD grad. One thing Ohio State has over UMD is a tremendous alumni network. It’s impressive. |
It is EXTREMELY impressive. |
When you have low SAT scores a big alumni network is crucial. |
I don’t see what one has to do with the other, but okay? I am the UMD grad who posted above. I’m guessing you haven’t seen the size and success of the Ohio State alumni network. I have. UMD simply can’t compare or relate, and I say that as a member of the UMD alumni network. |
